Self-care skills mean the ability of the child to meet his/her own needs and involve behaviors and activities that eventually lead to independence(King, 2014). These skills include dressing independently, brushing teeth and hair, bathing, toileting and personal hygiene, eating and drinking by themselves. It is important to encourage children to become independent with their daily living skills. It’s a healthy and normal part of their development. In addition, supporting this independence can make their life more easier and happier in the everyday life and routines (How To Encourage Self Help Skills in Children, 2016). The term “self-care” would mean that these skills are expected to be done independently and in many cases it becomes a problem …show more content…
Also teaching children life skills allow them to cope with the experiences and challenges that they may face through their life. These skills enable them to take responsibility for themselves and their actions and help them to form positive relationship with others. 4) Make sure that the materials and equipment in the classroom are child sized like sink, toilet seat, chairs, and tables.
5) The expectation for children with special needs and other children in the classroom should be developmentally age appropriate.
6) Use pictures: to clarify steps for children, use pictures for each step in the routine and post them where the routine take place, for example; for washing hands, post pictures above the sink. Showing children the pictures that illustrate what needs to do next.
7) Be a good model: when teaching the child to do each step, model and demonstrate how to do each step. When the child is starting to learn the step, take turns showing each other how to do the
