The Importance of Self Care on my Success in Nursing School and Career The importance of self-care for nurses is a critical to the ability to be successful throughout nursing school and our careers. Careers in nursing and completing school can be very stressful and challenging. Developing strategies to reduce this pressure will allow me to healthier and happier during this process. The areas I want to improve on include asking for help when I need it, getting more sleep, and losing some weight. To implement these changes I will focus on healthy and positive changes that I can realistically make. This will include improving communication skills, allowing appropriate amount of time for sleep, and improving my diet and exercise habits. …show more content…
They suggest that as high as sixty-five percent of nurses are considered overweight. In a study of 394 Icelandic nurses 21.7% of them felt they had poor physical health, did not exercise regularly, and experiencing trouble sleeping (Nahm, et al., 2014). The level of stress in nursing school and practice is very high and not feeling healthy can add a whole other level of stress. For myself I want to not only feel well but I want to be a good example to my patients I am caring for. When I am in the position of counseling a patient, whether it be in clinical practice or when I become a registered nurse, I want them trust and believe what I am telling them. This trusting relationship may be hard to form if they perceive me as not following my own advice. At this time in my life I have not experienced any noticeable negative health affects but I know if I do not take my weight and health more seriously this will not be the case. I think this will open the door to me feeling better about communicating when I am in real need of help. A sleeping goal I have set is to go to bed every night at 10:00pm. Having this set time I will be more likely to get the full eight hours of sleep a night that I am in need of. Exercise is my main goal for achieving weight loss. I am going to walk for 45 minutes Monday through Friday. I will also try to involve my son in this process as often as possible. Not only will it facilitate weight loss but it will allow for more quality time with my son. I think all of these goals are achievable. They are all small enough that implementing them will not be overwhelming yet at the same time big enough to make a difference.
Conclusion
My experience in nursing school and future career is going to be filled with stressful situations. All of these areas I would like to improve on not only will help lower my stress level but will also have health benefits. Creating healthy habits early will prepare me to succeed at what I am doing and to provide quality care not only for the patient but myself as well. This will in turn allow for a long and fulfilling career in
