Essay On Sea Otters

There are many different organisms and mammals that inhabit the oceans of our world and each one is unique and special to their environments. Each organism has a vital role to play and each is important in keeping our oceans balanced. Two of my favorite animals that I’d like to explore further is the sea otters and the manatees, both amazing marine mammals. Both animals are now considered endangered and many have taken acts towards conservation for them to perhaps strive once again in the future. But, before these acts are taken, you have to know what makes these mammals so special and what they contribute to our society.
Firstly, Sea otters come from the Mustelidae (weasel) family, which includes the three subspecies, such as the Northern sea otter. They are the second smallest marine animals, but the heaviest of the Mustelidae family. Instead of having blubber, like other marine animals, they have a thick fur, which is the densest of any in the Animal kingdom. Most of the otter species have now become endangered, with numbers that used to reach a million, but due to history’s fur trade, their numbers have fallen to just 106,000 worldwide. Female sea otters can live up to twenty years in the

They are also viviparous, which means they give birth to live young instead of laying eggs. Sea otters also don’t breed until later in life, which begins with a courtship of rolling and removing themselves from the rest of the group at around the age of seven. The gestation period of sea otters is longer than other types of otter, such as the river otters, and it can last up to twelve months, with pups being born in the water. And, after eight months, a sea otter can become independent. The average liter of sea otters is one pup and sometimes they will have twins, but usually only one survives due to their mother caring for the stronger of the

Male orcas have a lifespan of about 60 to 70 years while female orcas can live for 90 years, but those held in captivity see an average of nine years. It is not uncommon to see orcas with collapsed dorsal fins. Most orcas held in captivity are ill and as a result their dorsal fin begins to bend. On top of the terrible living space, the trainers that work with the orcas have limited knowledge in marine biology. The trainers are performers not biologists, their job is to put on a good show not to educate the public.…

SeaWorld has all of their guest thinking they can live up to 10 years, which isn’t wrong if SeaWorld orcas were the only Orcas in the whole world. Their lack of a long lifespan is due to the fact trainers only give them food when they perform tricks…

whales needed to eat 40,000 over 6 years. 40,000 otters over 6 years / 10,960.67598 otters per whale over 6 years = 3.649 whales needed. 3) Three plausible hypotheses that could explain why killer whales are eating more sea otters: a) Killer whales are eating more sea otters due to other food sources like seals and sea lions declining in quantity in high populated killer whale areas. b) Massive population decline of the killer whales favorite prey—like the great whale—from human influence like over-hunting started a food chain disaster that led to a massive decrease in small marine mammal populations as killer whales moved from marine mammal to marine mammal. c) Whether human or environmental factors, changes in the abundance of sea lions and seals and/or in the food they eat could cause killer whales to have to search for another food source to maintain their average field metabolic weight and because sea otters are smaller in caloric content, more sea otters are required to meet the metabolic…

Unfortunately, the average life span of the orcas at SeaWorld ranges from 25-30. The whales seem to die nearly three times the rate of wild orcas. It is extremely sad when we dive into how the whales are being taken care of. Many cases show that the whales become hyper-aggressive when they are held in captivity. Overnight the orcas are required to sleep in a small pool that is 20 feet-by-30 feet; the average length of an orca is 27 feet.…

History cannot be defined by the story of an individual; however, one person’s story can attempt to influence history, often through print. Via publishing their own narratives, Bibb and Otter both expressed their sentiment for broad influence, to varying success. Bibb leverages legal and religious debates to appeal to rational Northerners and poor whites, while Otter markets his wilder and more violent lifestyle towards his jolly fellow brethren and those fascinated or disgusted by his multitudes of amoral sprees through a series of short stories. Throughout his entire narrative, Bibb repeatedly references “All-wise Creator” [17], and “common law” [24], nods to God and legality, to decry and expose the hypocrisy of slavery, addressing both…

SeaWorld, on their official website, claims that the average lifespan for a female orca is 30, and the average life span for a male orca is 19 (SeaWorld, "Lifespan.") According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the average life span for males is 30-50, and the average life span for females is 50-100 (NOAA, "Killer Whale.") The average age of death for a killer whale living in SeaWorld is 13 (PETA, "8 Reasons Orcas Don 't Belong at SeaWorld.") The detrimental physical effects of captivity to orcas is shown here through their greatly shortened lifespans. SeaWorld acknowledges this by trying to cover up these horrific facts by putting false information on their website.…

The first reasoning of why manatees are the best underwater creatures is because of how different they live compared to the rest of the sea animals. “As with so many of the manatee attributes, the structure of its bones is unusual” (Reep par. 4). Also, manatees have different characteristics than others. Manatees are big, yet they do not kill others. They are considered the peacemakers because they are not considered prey and don’t attack prey.…

Their average maximum is 60-70 years for males and 80-100 years for females. With this being said, the average lifespan for Orcas in SeaWorld’s so called “care” is a grand average ranging from 9-13 years. For the Orcas that are fortunate enough to be in the wild, they swim on average about 100 miles a day. When the whales have been captured and put into their tanks they would need to swim 1,208 laps around their tank or swim 3,105 times back and forth in the longest part of their tank to reach that number. To make this easier to understand, their tank size is equivalent to a bathtub to us!…

This is far from the truth, orca whales can live up to 70-80 years and average at about 50. In captivity orca whales are lucky to live past their 20’s. The majority of people who attend the amusement parks have little interest in learning about the animals in the park, but SeaWorld uses many fallacies when speaking about the orca whales to those who are actually interested in being educated about the fascinating animals. As stated by George Millay, the founder of SeaWorld “SeaWorld was created strictly as entertainment. We didn’t try to wear this false façade of educational significance.”…

This type of social behavior proves that manatees are very peaceful, and extremely friendly. They are also very agile mammals, moving at an average pace of five miles an hour. If provoked, they have the ability to surge to speeds exceeding fifteen miles per hour.…

Animals meant to survive through any environmental disaster from earthquakes, hurricanes, tornados and tsunamis. These species were apes, dolphins, pigs, mice and especially otters. All of the other species could not survive the experiments and sadly they all became extinct but the otters had shown tremendous improvements. They were able through live through harsh conditions, be able to adapt on long periods underwater and on land without any food.…
