Urban school districts have been making the switch to school uniforms at an ever increasing rate. Meanwhile, suburban school districts have been slower to make the move to uniforms, often citing that the benefits achieved from uniforms are restricted to high poverty urban areas. According to The National Center for Education Statistics website (https://nces.ed.gov), “Between the 2003–04 and 2011–12 school years, the percentage of public schools reporting that they required that students wear uniforms increased from 13 to 19 percent.” The movement supporting school uniforms in urban schools, largely began with the Long Beach Unified School District, who at the start of the 1994 school year, required uniforms for kindergarten through eight grade

Suburban schools have generally not adopted these polices citing a variety of reasons, but the evidence contradicts these arguments and makes a solid case that suburban schools can benefit just the same. Uniforms provide a professional learning environment enabling students to focus first on education. Reducing the visual identifiers of varying socioeconomic circumstances promotes a reduction in clique mentality, reduces stereotyping that can lead to discrimination, and uniforms create a sense of belonging and school spirit. Finally, school uniforms help to discourage against the types of individual and stylistic differences which contribute to bullying and can ultimately lead to school
