The Importance Of School Uniforms In School

Robert Fulgham, a well-known author, once wrote a book of short essays titled, All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten. As stated by Fulgham, kindergarten is the start of an important time for a child 's development in life and continues throughout middle and high school. It is a time to find one’s self and learn basic life skills along with developing an educational base to support the students later in life. One main controversial issue throughout the school system is whether or not dress codes and school uniforms should be enforced. One of the main reasons students dislike school uniforms is the discomfort they bring when wearing them; which is confirmed by “School Uniforms ProCon.org” stating, “some students also find uniforms less comfortable than their regular clothes, which may not be conducive to learning.” In addition, students can not wear their regular clothes therefore they are uncomfortable throughout their school day which would draw their attention away from learning. If students are uncomfortable in their own skin, focusing on learning becomes difficult. The purpose of school is to learn and further one 's education — enforcing school uniforms takes away from that. Similarly, another article states, “some kids may find their fabric itchy, while others may find the zippers and buttons restrictive” (“9 Serious Pros and Cons of Wearing School Uniforms”). In like manner, kids are very itchy due to the fabric and feel uncomfortable with the buttons and zippers. Students are unfamiliar with restricting clothes which overall hinders their focus on school. Lastly, some argue that uniforms help improve test scores, but in reality, there is no true connection between uniforms and test scores. Uniforms tend to be gender specific which overall create a problem for some students. In fact, “School Uniforms ProCon.org”, claims, “schools where uniforms are specifically gendered (girls must wear skirts and boys must wear pants), transgendered, gender-fluid, and gender-nonconforming students can feel ostracized." Moreover, school uniforms pose a problem for those who are transgendered and furthermore make individuals feel anxious due to the increase in attention drawn to them. This restricts originality and damages the pathway of expression. If a man wants to wear a skirt, or a lady wear pants, they should have that right and school uniforms take that right away. In continuation, school uniforms take away the student’s freedom. For example, an article states, “requiring students to wear uniforms violates their constitutional right to freedom of expression and discourages creativity” (“School Uniforms”). Further, individuals have the right of expression and school uniforms restrict that right. Schools teach kids to be expressive and enforcing dress codes send a contradictory message. Clothes are an important asset to a student 's ability to express who they are — making students conform their wardrobe takes away the ability to be creative. All in all, uniforms take away individual 's freedom of expression and prevents
