Student’s cumulative file and examples of student work provides additional information to the teachers. Teachers will understand individuals’ strengths and weaknesses by looking at the previous work. However, some might argue that teachers should not examine school records because they can make prejudgment on the student. They believe school records will influence the teacher’s initial expectations about what students are capable of achieving and views on the student. They also think, teachers are unable to view students with a “clean slate”. This statement is false because in school environment, it is impossible to view students with a “clean slate.” If you go into the hallways, meetings, and lounge, teachers will discuss about your students either positively or negatively. Therefore, it is important for the teachers to remind themselves not to use records for making judgments about the students. Teachers should use the school records for information and to collect general idea to understand them. The clear purpose of examining the school records will help the teachers to create general expectations of the classroom and the students. The classroom environment is a very important factor in students learning and growth. As a teacher, I want to create a classroom environment, where I can encourage a cooperative learning experience for my students. Classroom environments should help encourage students to develop new knowledge and give them the opportunities to practice various types of skills. Therefore, teachers must know physical or serious emotional difficulties of the students. School records and IEP will inform teachers who will need physical accommodation to range the classroom to meet a certain student’s need. Teachers’ full understanding of medical issues like medication or an allergic reaction will prepare them for the emergency. Teachers can create an emergency phonebook or write special notes in the classroom to remind them and to create a safe, healthy and nurturing environment for every individual in the classroom. Teachers can create seating arrangement to help and motivate students to learn from each other’s. Teachers can arrange gifted students or patient students with student with disability or who needs extra motivation or guidance. Some might argue that first impression may be inaccurate and previous information may be biased, invalid or can be outdated.
