The Importance Of School Hours In Schools

Improved Essays
Schools all over the country are starting to shorten school hours to save up money, the question many ask is…will shortening school hours be the right thing to do? Many students would say yes, it’s a great thing to do, and then there are those students who actually enjoy going to school & would say it’s unnecessary to cut school hours. Some parents argue with the school district as to why they would be so cheap to cut school hours & days and what the district has to say is that they’re simply running low on money. School districts are slowly are slowly taking away privileges such as going on school fieldtrips, healthy lunches & breakfast, & they’re even coming to the point where they cut school days & hours to save up money. School times can sometimes be absurdly early, but because of later start times some problems stir up. Later school start times can increase grades and the well being of the kids, but the downfall of that is that schools have to pay extra for more buses because usually a district only has a few busses, which then makes the school start times staggered. Although the wellbeing of kids is far more important. The idea of staggering school time is smart but if its hurting the health of people I would pay the extra money to keep kids safe. The first reason that school should start later is because it will allow kids to be more well rested and makes it easier to focus.…

Five or Four Days in School When it comes to our students’ education, we always should pay extra attention to the decisions that we make, especially if the decisions that we’re going to make are weighty and could have an impact on our students’ educational performance. In Jaclyn Melicharek’s article “Four-Day School Weeks: The Rule to Skip School,” she makes several claims against the four-day school policy, which is a convenient policy that seems to pervade our schools nowadays. She believes four-day school policy is ineffective and rather harmful to our students, teachers and staff because it reduces our students’ educational performance, deters the academic value that our students are obtaining and shatter the lives of the teachers and…

They wonder what later school end times would mean for sports and after-school activities, for example, and how much additional money districts would have to spend on transportation. Because many districts stagger their transportation in order to use the same buses for all of their students, pushing back middle and high-school start times could mean paying for more buses.…

The debate on later school start times has become a very popular issue in the U.S. Studies show students should start school at 11am, this is when the human brain starts to wake up and begin to fully function. “I do believe schools should have a later start to improve academic performance for student athletes like myself, I am in all ap classes and I’m on the schools poms team which means I practically run off of coffee”. Student Gretchen Volling said.…

With budget cuts to education and financial aid being decreased across the board with tuition costs being increased at the same time, less people can afford to pursue higher learning and sometimes can’t afford Pre-K to High School for their children. Teachers also suffer from this as their jobs become just that, jobs. Often times they are laid off by districts in order to cope with the sudden loss of funds which affects their families as well as their students. Lesser known in this battle are school bus drivers who also fall under the umbrella as education; they too, are laid off when budgets are cut and suffer from decreased pay from an already low paying job. The legislature tends to wait until there is a course case to focus on school funding and possible changes in how school funding operates because they’d rather it be a “silent” problem until people start to notice and have a public outcry about it.…

Many concerns can be put to ease with reasonable solutions. For example, to take care of the parental transportation concern, bus schedules can be moved back and be more accessible, which leaves a convenient and safe way to get to school. It is understandable that there is only so much daylight in a day and for extra-curriculars can be concerned about pushing back practices/classes. By taking out a student's off block and minimizing excess time, even in the littlest ways, for example in lunch and passing periods, the school day itself can be made shorter but still efficient. The switch to later start times can be made right at the start of a new year, that solves the problem of disruption in the middle of the year towards families, teachers and students.…

But one of the main problems that stops people from playing sports in high school is the scheduling. In high school, students tend to choose much more challenging courses. As result, student athletes have less free time. Most sports hold practice until six in the afternoon, by then it’s tough for students to get work done. This is because when most athletes get home, all they want to do is sleep, as result of grueling practice.…

Also pushing back all school start times in a district is affordable because the schools are still being used each day and not more so it won’t cost more for more busses or more teachers, most things are staying the same except all start times will be an hour or so later than they used to be. Finally giving students a rest…

At the end of every high school year there is always an evil, beastly force standing between the students and glorious summer break; the final exam. A final exam is supposed to test one’s knowledge of the information taught throughout the year. Having these two hour test stacked back to back can only lead to high levels of stress. Without going into details, I am not the most proactive student. I am basically the person who won’t start a project until the day before it’s due or will be up late at night doing homework because I decided that three hours of Netflix was what I needed after school.…

Every week more than 28% of high school students fall asleep in school,22% will fall asleep while doing their homework, and 14% are late or miss class due to oversleeping. Nearly half of the students sleep less than eight hours on school nights. I think our nation’s school system is flawed in many ways,we make our children get up before their recommended waking time even after scientific proof that they shouldn’t,we make curriculum difficult,we have tests that are more about test scores than education, and we limit creativity in our schools.. Lots of people want the schools to change for the improvement of student grades and attitude.if we were to change our school system students would improve and we wouldn’t be 13 best in the world. If you are going to ask a child what his or her favorite part of school is you might get a few answers like math or science but you will get a lot of lunch, gym and recess. As most people would agree with this, people like the free moving times that are fun over those that you have to work hard. In schools you cannot take away lunch it is a basic human right, gym is limited but again can’t really be taken away because it teaches so much. But on the other hand recess is not indispensable. Many school are questioning if they should keep it or if they could use that valuable time for more important things.…

There are people that want school days to be shortened and others that want school days to be longer. I believe that the school days should be shorter because a large amount of time is wasted during study halls and when they are given in class time assignments. It would be better if school days were shortened because they would have less time to work on assignments because they would not work on them anyways. Some would like to be with their families since their…

Helping children understand routines and classroom schedule are very important as it helps the child feels safe and secure because they know what will happen next in both a routine and with a classroom schedule. Classroom schedules and routines also help the teacher build a relationship with the student, helps them when planning and also helps with child guidance. Research indicates that the structure of the classroom environment, paired with planned instruction, supports the development of social emotional skills as well as prevents behavioral issues.
