Every one of us has taken a different route in order to receive our high school diploma on this stage today. However, as I stand here looking out on the Kamiakin High School graduating class of 2016, I know we all have one thing in common; sacrifices. During the last four year, we have all made sacrifices, both tangible and intangible, to get to this point. These sacrifices, have been as insignificant as losing sleep, to as serious as surrendering our character to conform to another’s standard. Each sacrifice, no matter how big or small, has many implications as nothing is gained without something being relinquished. Over the past four years, I have spent countless hours attempting to write that perfect English paper, studying for that AP …show more content…

I challenge you to reflect on the last four years of your life. What would you tell your freshman-self? Did you sacrifice your time and energy on not so positive endeavors or people? Was each sacrifice worth it? The beauty of life is that the choice is ours. As we reflect on the many sacrifices we’ve made, it is safe to say that some were probably not worth it, where as others helped to shape who we are as young adults. Each lesson we’ve learned up to this day will undoubtedly help guide us to make greater decisions later in life. Kamiakin High School Class of 2016, you will be faced with many obstacles over the next few years, what are you willing to sacrifice to attain your life goals? In high school, courses are taken by the student’s choice, not the parent’s. Because of the high expectations placed upon me by myself, my peers, my teachers, and parents, it is my obligation to strive to reach those expectations. Directly or indirectly, expectations placed upon myself has defined my character; however, like the author, expectations can lead a person through half the journey to success. I started my journey through writing this year a bundle of nerves and a stomach full of coffee. This is my first year taking an advanced English course, but I was determined to do well. There has been no sleeping in class or slacking off this year, I’m lucky enough to take a college course a year early and at a better price, and I’m not going to waste it. I’ve learned a lot this semester, including but not limited to: identifying how exactly the author’s purpose and audience determines effective writing, developing pieces of writing though a process of planning, revising, and drafting, compose an organized essay with clear points and main ideas, used appropriate tone and formality, critiqued writing, and finally how to grasp the MLA format. My writing has improved through the concepts I have learned this semester.…

In the Spring of last year, it was my Junior year, one of the most critical years in high school. It’s the year that colleges look at the most, also it was the year that I was in some of the most challenging classes. Mostly honors, a lot of homework, and tests to go along with it. Studying would take me until late at night, and even on weekends, all day long. When it’s the end of the term everyone checks their grades for their report cards, and progress reports.…

Honestly, I was less than excited to take this course. Writing 121 is a requirement for all Oregon Associates transfer degrees so it wasn’t like I chose to take the class for my own sake, and being alone having recently moved to Eugene assured me that I wasn’t going to find any familiar in the classroom or on campus at all. It’s not like I expected the course to be a breeze, but it sure didn’t seem like anything special. Having to announce my name change to the whole class wasn’t fun either, in fact it just reminded me of the reason I dropped out of high school in the first place.…

There is no such thing as a perfect world. Everyday decisions and sacrifices are made from the moment one wakes up to the second they fall asleep. Either way, choices are made by everyone whether it be for themselves or for others. Thus sometimes requiring a larger sacrifice.…

According to American businessman Dave Ramsey, “The most important decision about your goals is not what you are willing to do to achieve them, but what you are willing to give up”. When I think of the word “sacrifice”, the first thing that usually comes up in my head are people slaughtering animals as an offering to a divine or supernatural figure. However, when we talk about sacrifice in today’s society, it means giving up(something important or valued) for the sake of other considerations. I have had to make a lot of changes to how I spend my time in order to work on homework this year. I spend a lot less time with friends and family now.…
