STEM consists of mostly men rather than women. Women are not encouraged to be in that field and they feel they cannot succeed as well as men. However, times are changing and more women are beginning to take part in the science field. The striking disparity between the numbers of men and women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics has often been considered as evidence of biologically driven gender differences in abilities and interests. People judge women to be less competent than men in “male” jobs unless they are clearly successful in their work. However, STEM is not just for men; it is for strong minded, intelligent, and hardworking individuals, …show more content…
They should be taught that there is more than playing with dolls, cooking, and cleaning, the typical things that women should do. Girls do not receive the same treatment as boys do in science and mathematics classes. “Teachers ' unconscious stereotyped gender bias that boys are smarter than girls, especially in mathematics and the sciences, meant they were willing to work with boys to reach the answer because they perceived boys were capable of achieving that goal but girls were not.” (Gender bias in Teaching). STEM education creates critical thinkers, increases science literacy, and enables the next generation of innovators which leads to new products and processes that sustain our …show more content…
Women bring a different feel to things than men do. Women are just as smart as men; however, women need a little more encouragement to be in the STEM field. Mentors, teachers, professors, or counselors should encourage girls to go into the STEM field. “If girls see that most of their female mentors and older female friends aren’t going into STEM, they are less likely to go into those fields themselves.” (Closing the STEM gap). Older women that are currently in STEM fields should highly encourage younger generations that females are able to handle hard labor of materials, such as STEM, just as any males in this field. Women are also much more likely to look to others teaching assistants, professors, and advisors to affirm, and regain, their confidence. Woman are just as important as males. The materials will be the same, the productivity will be the same; it’s just a different gender providing the information. We need young leaders, both females and males to cure diseases, write computer programs, discover the next technological advances, and ultimately make a great change in the
