In many ways I am similar to most seventeen-year-old boys: I enjoy playing sports, eating colossal amounts of food, and hanging out with friends. However, I also enjoy playing the saxophone, taking tests, and doing carpentry work with my father. I have worked hard to become a starter and captain in two sports, and I have earned the best grades possible at my school. I believe my experiences of stepping outside of my comfort zone and pursuing interests outside of the ordinary have given me a foundation on which to build the next level of my education. I am a three sport athlete, a straight-A student, an active volunteer in youth sports, and a section leader in my high school band. From the beginning, I have always been involved in sports and band, but as high school has progressed I have become more involved in my school. I wrestled for a season, joined FCA, NHS, and Interact, and participated in a high school musical. I have learned to open up and …show more content…
This experience has greatly improved my problem-solving skills and my general knowledge of how things work. I have been around similar instances of people fixing things my entire life. My grandfather and father fix things, I have watched them from when I was two years old. These projects of theirs have always peaked my interest. These experiences are a major reason I have decided to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering. I have also always enjoyed science and math related courses. My problem-solving skills and interest in the subject will serve me well in my future career as an engineer. However, other subjects in school did not come as easily to me. I have worked hard in my English and communication courses to earn A’s and improve my rhetoric skills. Hard work, interest, and problem-solving are what have made me choose my career, and SIUE has a fantastic engineering program in which I look forward to being
