Learning to respect people’s efforts and opinions can help you stay happy and satisfied in our interpersonal life. Self-respect can help us move forward with the feeling of confidence that influences other people’s opinion about us. The mature life dictates its own rules along with its own ways of demonstrating our respect to our parents, colleagues, or employers. Here are some specific ways of showing your respect (Fromm):
• Before making a decision that can affect another person just ask him/her “How would you feel if...?”
• Do not interrupt your opponent in the discussion or daily conversations.
• Take into consideration his/her opinion.
• Try to understand the beliefs, needs, and values of another person before commenting on his/her opinion.
• Voluntarily make changes and compromises to support feelings, needs, and desires of another person.
• Avoid trying to impose your opinion on others or to convince someone to do something he/she does not want to do.
