The Importance Of Respect Week

Decent Essays
It is truly hard to watch and sit through multiple PAC events with very opinionated students who share their opinions but when another student voices out that they have a different view it is considered extremely disrespectful. One thing I enjoy about this school is Respect Week, but Respect Week is gone about in the worse manner imaginable. Respect Week revolves around admiring and highlighting students that are apart of the LGBTQ community and being a minority. Students go sit up on a stage a talk about how they were disrespected and discriminated against and how everyone must respect them and that only their opinion matters. For the past two years this school has hardwired into our mind that there is only one side to every story. There is

As we were asked not to speak at the meeting today we did not address these concerns but we feel that it was disingenuous of Administration to not voice this as they are aware we are not protesting major credit requirements nor ever have in this protest. If we really care about addressing these concerns lets actually address them not host campus wide meetings in which the people actually protesting are not allowed to speak while we address concerns not related to the actual protest. An administration that promotes better communication but then tells student leaders not to speak while allowing the message of the protest to be misconstrued is hypocritical at best. Our slogan of Students Last is, we feel, a reflection of Administration and their actions in addressing student concerns.…

Just because the students like what they had to say doesn’t mean they should be convicted for stating their opinions. Though a bit more extreme the Texas vs. Johnson case dealt with a similar issue of distinguishing between threatening and disliked opinions. Johnson was arrested mostly because his actions offended someone. Similarly, these professors and administers are being forced from their jobs for saying…

(De)Constructing Gender: Unit 2, Prelim 2 Every person deserves the freedom to express themselves in whichever way that corresponds to what they feel, as long as it poses no danger on the well-being of another. As a result, they require safe and comfortable spaces to express themselves without worrying about physical and verbal attacks from those who are terrified by their lack of knowledge of who these people in question identify as. This illustrates what several LGBTQ people face on a daily basis. Therefore, we need to undo this injustice.…

In the midst of heavy racial tension among college campuses across the country, Cal Poly Pomona has stood out above the rest by being culturally sensitive and encouraging students to take initiative and learn about other customs and ethnicities outside of their own. Over the course of the last academic session for students, whether quarter or semester there have been reported protests regarding racial injustice on at least five college campuses across the country. There have been zero protests at Cal Poly and according to President Coley it is because of it’s “long standing inclusive values and diverse campus.” She does not believe the campus has to handle damage control like other universities to recent events because it is in Cal Poly’s DNA starting with faculty and staff to be culturally aware and sensitive.…

Lecture 1: Respect, Dignity and Culture This lecture, on Aboriginal cultural safety, was an informative emersion into the Aboriginal way of life. It helped me, personally, begin to develop, an understanding of Aboriginal’s culture and traditions. However, in my limited life experience, interactions with Aboriginals, have been through negative observations. From news bulletins on television, write ups in the community newspaper, to crossing the street and avoiding a swearing, intoxicated Indigenous male. It is a real contrast, to the respectful Aboriginal introduction Gningla Taylor presented, when Aboriginals encounter another person.…

Last Spring, I had a student who was in the final semester of his senior year and was oppositional and rude in class. He had come to us because he had failed out of his previous private school and we were his last option. Because he is very intelligent he loved to point out every mistake that I made in class. I would politely accept these corrections, but was annoyed by his negative attitude. When he refused to participated with classmates during an experiment, I asked him to stay after and speak with me.…

Although I know that this essay is not supposed to be of the persuasive kind, there is an issue that has been weighing on my mind as of late that I believe Roxbury Latin must address, and that is the lack of affinity groups on campus. As someone who is part of the LGBT community at an all-boys school, I have certainly felt excluded in some aspects of school life. People are not openly disrespectful to me or my community, at least not to my face, but I have certainly felt that far too often my presence has not been acknowledged. From discussions that we have in classes like personal development to assemblies that we have on topics pertinent to teens, whenever my community is discussed, it is always a sort of afterthought or not even included…

“Learn from the people who have walked the path before you...respect them”. This quote explains the importance of your elders and how respect is owed to them. In “A Celebration of Grandfathers” by Rudolfo Anaya, it shows the importance of this quote by saying that respect for your elders is important. In the story, it follows the story of a man who was taught to respect his elders since when he was in his adolescent years. His elders would enlighten him with their stories and experiences that they experienced before.…

It seems so simple to love, that the comfort of attraction lends itself to everyone and that the subtleties of interest are selfsame, by instinct at least; even so, it’s said that we’re conditioned to love, but to me, it’s not that we’re conditioned to it as much as we’re in the condition of its capability, simply being human—to love’s as natural as life itself, as typical as sight or sound, as native as a thought of rationality. Trouble, then, comes about when love we know true doesn’t quite liken the love someone else experiences, from which differences and judgements then arise. This is true of many circumstances, but continues to be true for Americans who identify as LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgendered)—that judgments of them…
