There are many different aspects that contribute to a society and its flourishing. Respect is a main component that is present in societies and is used in our everyday lives. First we have to ask ourselves what respect really means: the admiration for someone or something and its greatness or worth. Having respect is something our parents and teachers teach us from a very young age because it is an important life skill we end up using for the rest of our lives. We are taught that to earn respect from others, we have to treat others with respect. We use respect when we talk to our peers, our teachers, our elders and hope that they are respectful in return. Respect for and towards other people is not the only sort of respect we need to use: having respect for yourself and respect for our belongings is also important. Respecting others as well as one’s surroundings benefits a society socially and is necessary for a society to function.

Without self-compassion, one’s self-esteem and self-confidence can be knocked down by others, or even yourself, possibly leading to depression or worse. People who do not treat themselves with respect tend to tear others down leaving them with a loss of self-respect as well. Especially in this current generation, teenagers are constantly disrespecting each other for their own self-benefit believing it will make them well liked by others.
