During a police interview about a stolen vehicle, Sam said, “I could have lied and told him that my friend had put a gun to my head… but I would have to live with that lie,” (Davis, et al., ). In making this choice, Sam is proving to have his own belief that knows lying isn’t the right thing. This is important because when he finds in himself in the middle of problems where he’s tempted by cheating or bending laws, he’ll have the moral compass with him to choose the right decision that is focused on the ethical thing to do. Making the right decision ensures that he won’t have any regrets in the future and that he has integrity, which is what will shape Sam into the successful person that he can be. In the middle of an adrenaline rush after stealing a sweater, Rameck thinks to himself, “I had gambled with my future for a lousy sweatshirt. How could I be so stupid?” (Davis, et al., ). One can see that Rameck’s poor decision of stealing the sweatshirt was caused by a poor moral compass and because of this he will have to face the consequences. If Rameck possessed a stronger moral compass, just as Sam had then he would’ve known the potential risks of stealing and the dishonesty that comes with it. A moral compass provides the navigation that almost every successful person needs and when Rameck improves his then he’ll become a more successful person.
