Think about the way you dress and what your ‘style’ says about you. Now take a second and think about how the typical middle or high school student dresses. Usually, from what I have found, their way of dress is inappropriate for their age group. They are trying to stay up on the latest fashion trends and impress their peers by what they wear. Then there are the not-so-typical teenagers, who dress, as we like to say ‘differently’: Goth, Emo, Punk Rock, etc. All of these teenagers identify who they are with their clothing. But it is the clothing that gives the first impression on everyone in the world. Their clothing is what their student peers are looking at and are automatically judging them for. Teenagers are at the age where they are trying to find themselves, and figure out ‘who they are’. Clothing is an easily accessible item that can help a student to outwardly express oneself in his or her own way. When a school requires them to all dress the same, I can see how this may result in the lack of freedom of expression that many parents and students are angry about. In spite of all the outcry and anger from some parents and (most likely) the students, uniforms have so far proven to be successful, and there are other ways for a student to express oneself.
It can also be said that a requirement of school uniforms in the public school districts will grant every student in equal chance of judgment. Appearance is a rather huge debacle in a student’s life. Physical appearance can be a tremendous positive or negative in their lives and one of the ways most people perceive “characteristics or abilities” (Behling, D. 1994). Also, the way a student presents himself or herself and grasps their appearance has an immense impact on the way their environment responds to
