Essay On Older Adult Reminiscing

When caring for the older adult, reminiscing can be beneficial to the older adult as well as the care giver. Reminiscing is the act of recalling cheerful past life events. The older adult may feel a sense of comfort thinking back to when times were better, while the care giver is enlightened to see their patient in a whole new light (Tabloski, 2014). My experience in working with the older adult is limited to the post-surgical gynecological patient. I work in the postpartum unit and occasionally we are blessed to take care of the post-surgical patient. Often times, the older adult patient will hear a baby crying or see a mother pushing her newborn in a crib in the hallways. This frequently starts the patient reminiscing about when she had children. I love to hear about the experiences my patients have. It amazes me how much things change over time. The normal labor and delivery experience of years ago and what it is now, are night and day to each other. Other things my patients have reminisced about are when they got married and how many children and grandchildren they have.

There are benefits for the older adult that include a decrease in depressive symptoms and improve her psychosocial well-being. Benefits for the healthcare provider include knowing the patient for more than what they see in front of them. My eyes were opened after watching the video on how hard it must be for someone to lose their independence and not be seen for who they really are as well as how important it is to get to know my patients. There are changes I will make as a result of watching this video.
