Personal Narrative: My Muslim Experience

Improved Essays
Whenever this assignment was assigned, I pondered the various religious services that are easily available to attend. Islam seemed to be one that struck my interest particularly because of the cultural and personal connection I have towards it, but then I thought I should experience a lesser known religion that I still have a cultural connection towards. I grew up in a divided household of Islam and Catholicism, thus having a very different background than most. I was raised with Muslim principles; however, I was never an active Muslim in the way that I never went to the mosque nor participated in other respective activities. Baha’ism has been something that I was always aware of because of my Persian roots. Prior to my visit, I did not know …show more content…
It was not very big and I had assumed that I may have had gone to the wrong place because of the minimal amount of people that I saw in the parking lot. I had gone with two fellow classmates, so I felt a little more comfortable than if I were to go by myself. I walked in through the back door and immediately heard music when I walked into the kitchen. I was greeted by members of the Baha’i center making coffee. I proceeded to follow the music that I heard and ended up in an open area that had about 50 seats. There were only about 7 people already sitting down as I proceeded towards the back of the room to sit. The worship had not official started but they were playing religious music with a picture slide show occurring at the same time. An elderly woman had pointed out 2 sheets of paper that were sitting on the seats in front of me and I picked it up. I looked at it and wondered why we would be given a paper that has quotes from various religious texts varying from Christianity to Islam and of course Baha’ism. Another elderly woman began to read the first quote aloud to the group. Following her reading aloud, it would pass to someone else. Eventually, it came to be my turn following some people that did not. Everyone was very encouraging towards me and I began to read aloud my paragraph which was relatively

My religious community has played a profound role on my development as an adult, the three guiding principals of Zoroastrianism: "Good Thoughts, Good Deeds, and Good Words" guide my actions daily. Being part of such a small community while heightening my sense of being has also made me more appreciative and understanding of other cultures & groups. For me understanding others has become a key component in understanding myself. My community has also enabled me to be a better communicator- as often times questions are asked regarding my ethnicity and religion where I can act as a spokesperson for the…

So it started out as a normal school day and as we were coming back from lunch we all went to the restroom and only six of us got taken. As we were using the restroom Andrew Myers, Jahzara Mckinney, Kadance Gravely, Maddox Lyons, Hayden Elliott, Kaylie Hawks and myself were pulled into the sewers and through a pipe that somehow took us to a island. We were stranded there by ourselves the island was like a forest in a way it has tall redwood trees high grass like the jungle and a beautiful glossering pond. So as we were there we were all panicking then I just got really quiet. We went to bed and the next morning Hayden and Jahzara were fighting over food we had from killing Andrew we had a lot of food left over from yesterday but both Jahzara and Hayden wanted that same piece.…

Everyone joined together and sang while standing. Right after, they had bible study which reminded me of how our father in a Catholic church recites it. Everyone just watched and listened as their pastor read through it for about 30 minutes. Shortly after they had a discussion from the watch tower book that every Jehovah witness practices and discusses across the world. I found the discussion interesting because they read through it and asked questions.…

The Devon School was once full of life and everyone was happy that is, until I came. The boys really thought they knew who I was but they were completely wrong. This all began at the Devon school I met Gene, Finny, Leper, Brinker, and the other students. At first when I met Gene I was suspicious of him because I felt he was not trustworthy and was conservative. However, I noticed that Finny trusted everyone, including Gene, which he was humble and did not brag about how athletic or cool he was.…

I've always loved different cultures and tried to surround myself in as many as possible however I could. This was usually me trying to learn on my own from the internet, music and movies, but I was still missing that X factor that really made me indulge in other cultures. As soon as I walked onto Swarthmore's campus I felt that X factor. Sitting in the info session and taking the tour, I truly felt at home. There are many things I am grateful for in my life, but I am most grateful to have the freedom of religion. In many other countries across the world there are a multitude of people being tormented and killed for their beliefs. There have been men, women, and children who have died because they believe follow Jesus. So if there is one thing I am thankful for it is to know that I can belive Jesus to be my savior and know I will not be killed because of…

Going through small private schools in a little town since I was in kindergarten has set me up for very few cultural experiences but my parents never wanted my siblings and I to grow up like this. When my family goes on vacation my mom always tries to fully submerge us in the culture around us. For example, a few years ago, my family and I went on a vacation in Nuevo Vallarta, Mexico. We stayed in a nice resort and it was never necessary to leave the property if you didn’t want to. Most people never did.…

The Guardian, a British news source both on paper and online shares an article that the Muslim Council of Britain has deemed the documentary “My Week as a Muslim” aired on Channel 4 was a prime example of racism and stereotype against the Muslim community rather than the thought-provoking educational piece it was intended to be. Through reading the article and personally watching the 40-minute long documentary, it becomes clear that it sheds clear connection drawn on various theories on religion and media, particularly focusing on the idea that with a documentary such as this, the traditions, culture, and frameworks of a religion are exposed to a wider audience that otherwise would not have the opportunity to get a glimpse into the life of…

My worldview closely resembles the Biblical Worldview described in the Charry text, but by no means is anywhere near where it could be. My Christian character will continue to develop and mature throughout my life as I continue to study the scriptures, commune with God in prayer, continually ask for repentance, and forgiving those who have showed transgressions toward me. L. Gregory Jones states, “Christian living requires a willingness to inquire after the God of Jesus Christ, an inquiry which shapes us a people of repentance and forgiveness” (Charry, 2000, p. 204). Repentance and forgiveness are two aspects of the Christian walk that I struggle with. There are many times that I get so busy with life that I forget to prayerfully repent…

A Thousand Experiences Throughout life, individuals face different obstacles and struggles; my obstacle was my tendency to be shy. For example, when I was faced with social pressures like speaking in front of a class for a presentation, or meeting new people, I would be a nervous wreck. My palms would sweat, my voice would tremble, and it took all the strength I could muster to overcome my irrational fears. I only had a small, albeit close knit group of friends due to my introverted ways.…

I decided to attend the Jewish temple Shalom during Saturday morning service for my cultural field assignment. I chose this event because I feel a student’s religion is also important to understand just as much as their language. Understanding another religion other than a religion that I practice will help me connect with students of other faiths. I am not very familiar with the Jewish faith nor do I know a lot of people who practice Judaism. That is why I chose this cultural event to observe and witness.…

As I stepped through the door into the foyer of the Islamic Foundation, I was struck first by how incredibly out of place I felt. I had arrived in time for the afternoon prayer, the Asr, and found myself surrounded by the hustle of those finding a place to sit and wait for the service to begin. Unsure of where I needed to be, I inquired and was directed to the back of the prayer room to sit and observe the proceedings. As both members of the community and fellow classmates began to take their places in the prayer room, I began to take in my surroundings.…

On August 26, 2005, I gave my life to Christ, and it was the start of a whole new chapter of my journey. I still remember that night vividly in my head. The feelings of excitement, joy, and love were very tangible in my heart. My mom and dad were both sitting beside me on my bed while I was told the importance of this decision and how my life would never be the same. Even at 5 years old, I was aware of my decision to follow Jesus and accept him into my heart.…
