But don’t let that keep you from taking the leap to do it. In my first meeting at the American Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Association, it was like landing on another planet. Surgeons, dentists, nurses, psychologists, biologists, statisticians, and social workers were all presenting on their research within their own fields, but also how it ties into team care. I honestly didn’t know half of the background research they presented as common knowledge. But within a short amount of time, through immersion in this new world, I learned a great deal. I’m glad I didn’t let anything keep me from becoming involved, because what I have gotten out of doing so has been all positive and has benefited my practice.
Communication is always an important component to creating a good and trustworthy relationship with a referring medical specialist. If they have referred a patient to you, they should never have to guess about the status of that patient working with you. Always keep them current on what treatment is being done and how it’s progressing, and be sure to provide them with the documentation they may want to review or have for their files.
