To have needed redemption the characters must have had to fall from grace. In the Kite Runner, Amir does the unforgivable and watches Hassan being violated but the worst part about it was that he ran away, didn’t tell anybody about it and played it off like nothing ( Hosseini 2004 pgs. 75-78). But the fact that he felt that “the real reason he was running, was that Assef was right: Nothing was free in this world. The reason Amir ran away from the scene was because “He was a coward. He was afraid of Assef and what he would do to him. He was afraid of getting hurt. That’s what he told himself” ( Hosseini 2004 pg.77). This cowardice help cause the reason Amir did his unforgivable act. Thought in P.T. Barnum’s case he did it for two reasons. The first reason was that “ His father was treated like trash. He was treated like trash. His children won’t be”( Chernin & Gracey 2017) and the other reason was that he felt that he would never be enough. With these two thoughts in P.T. Barnum’s head, he subconsciously hurt his and caused more hardship for his circus family. That is how these hamartia’ caused people to get hurt and for his people to need redemption.
