Intervention For a child with reading difficulties to stay up to par on their grade reading level it is important to help them at the earliest stage of any signs of struggling. In preschool if there is a child who seems to be at risk of developing a reading disability immediately introduce them to phonological activities (Elbro & Petersen, 2004). Starting intervention at a young age is seen to be the most effective. The earlier intervention is started the better and intense intervention it is need to for the best outcome. It is suspected that the less one knows about speech sounds, when entering school, are at greater risk in developing a reading disorder (Elbro & Petersen, 2004). Orton-Gillingham provides multiple programs that are based on reading instruction (Giess et al, 2012). They are organized, consecutive, and multisensory teaching approaches. In order to teach phonological awareness and the understanding of speech and sounds in language effectively, the programs use tactile-kinesthetic, auditory, and visual strategies. Orton-Gillingham programs differentiate with approaches and material depending on the age group it is addressing to, young struggling readers or college student (Giess et al, 2012). Orton-Gillingham programs focuses on the student’s weaknesses, but also emphasizes focus on certain links and components that are important in the reading process that are strengthening. An instructor will monitor the student’s progression through the reading tasks and will only proceed once they become proficient in the current skills. It can be noted that even though this program is more prevalent in private schools it was utilized in the Framingham Public School system. During the time when the students would get into their designated reading groups and practice reading, those who had more difficulty would go to an additional room to receive one-on-one instruction going through The Wilson Reading System booklets. Each booklet is a different level providing different phonological awareness tasks starting with basic words that are real and non-sense words, as well as providing sentences and passages to practice. After completion of a booklet, a test is given to see if one can proceed to the next booklet. The content in the booklets become more complex and involve more high-level phonological skills. The Wilson Reading System program teaches one how to sound out words, break drown compound words, the pairing of certain letters that break the “rule” on how they are suppose to sound, and so much more.
