There are many things going around saying that El Nino could end California’s drought. What El Nino is a band of warm ocean water that develops in the central and east central equatorial pacific. What El Nino could bring to California is much needed rain to fill up reservoirs, rivers and give plants a much needed drink of water. A lot of people are getting really excited because El Nino is coming to California and end the 4 year long drought. But meteorologists are saying that there is a 50/50 chance of El Nino to come and bring rain.…
Jerry Brown said the state was facing perhaps "the worst drought that California has ever seen since records (began) about 100 years ago. " The United States spends billions of dollars per year treating water; however, we only use 10 percent for drinking and cooking. The pros of using treated waste water for drinking water and agriculture: conserve our fresh water resources, replenishes sensitive ecosystems where wildlife and plants are vulnerable, and help ease water shortages. Moreover, it decreases wastewater discharges and may reduce and prevent pollution. Yet, by doing so there are cons that cannot be denied such as, the increase of cost for infrastructure treatment facilities and extra pipes to control it and finally public perception.…
An atmospheric cycle called El Nino is not supposed to be the savior to this but should change things. It allows the southern jet stream to hit Southern California instead of the Pacific Northwest. This allows moisture and storms to be more recurrent than past years. Landslides and mudslides may be a product of this, but things like the LA river and agriculture will be somewhat…
Now it is questioned whether the causes of California drought is linked to climate change, or even man-made. The severe atmospheric conditions joint with California’s drought occurrence are far more likely to appear with today’s global warming that have not existed before California citizens relied on the large amount of greenhouse gases. Combinations of unusual warm temperatures for California weather and stagnant air conditions, the loss of precipitation has produced a dangerous uproar with incidents relevant to air pollution, wildfires, and increased evaporation. The high increase in evaporation rates gradually lead to greater drying of soils and vegetation, having the potential to affect the natural land-based and manage ecosystems, coastal systems, and both…
California's groundwater is almost completely depleted. Now, instead of making rules and trying to preserve and replenish the amount we have left, we are just sitting back letting farmers/growers take as much water as they want as well as how much they need. With minimal rules and no fees, farmers are now using 1000-1200 feet well drillers, “Many people are concerned because we don't know how much groundwater we have left” state's expert Nathan Halverson. In order to conserve and replenish our groundwater, California needs to regulate the use of groundwater, harvest stormwater, and desalinate.…
The human body is made up of 50-70% of water, (Howard) so freshwater is very important to everyone. Despite this, most people do not conserve water, and this has a huge impact on our environment. Water scarcity may bot be as big of a deal in the US than some other countries, but California is in a drought, which raises concerns for residents. What exactly do humans need freshwater for? Well, a part from safe drinking water, we also use freshwater to "irrigate crops, as part of sanitation systems, and in industrial factories..." among other things.…
temperatures have also depleted reservoirs. The San Luis Reservoir, which is the largest off stream Reservoir in the United States, has been affected greatly. The Reservoir’s water supply has been cut in half thanks to the drought. The San Luis Reservoir is not the only reservoir being depleted. Reservoirs all over the U.S have been being depleted.…
Mr. Wolf & Mrs. Muse 2/15/17 AP Seminar Economic System of California: The Effects of the Drought and Economic Shift The California water crisis is a severe issue which has affected many people. The Californian economy has been hit very hard by the drought, causing water prices to rise. The government in California has limited the usage of water, and has caused people to cut back on it. There are current methods of water conservation in California, however, they are not the most efficient way to conserve water and save money.…
After five years of drought, California has been accessing groundwater to provide for their water needs. The access of groundwater use has caused the land to sink slowly over decades, but recently the more extensive pumping has caused the groundwater levels to quickly reach dangerous lows. This has resulted in the land to sink at a rapid rate, putting a large section of California’s aboveground infrastructure at risk. NASA was able to discover this notable difference in land height through radar observation from satellites and aircrafts that have made maps over time to show the sinking. These accurate measurements have shown that some parts of California, like the San Joaquin Valley, have sunk almost a two inches per month, and other areas were much lower over the span of less than a year.…
Man-made Water Crisis Droughts have played a huge role throughout California’s history. Just as recently as two years ago, California’s record-breaking drought was declared the worst in the state’s history. However, this year, Governor Jerry Brown declared the drought emergency at an end. Many residents have referred to California’s issue as a “man made drought.”…
I hope while months past we get more water but if you want to still live in california you have to help the community, the drought is something serious so conserve water and help…
Once admired for being “the place that never rains,” California’s lack of precipitation is now a growing concern. The low levels of rainfall are affecting the environment…
Others argue it is the worst drought California has endured in the last century. Some experts claim that California is in the midst of a “mega drought” roughly defined as a drought that lasts two decades or longer (Fountain, 2015). This current dry spell is thought to be caused by El Nino 17 years ago, yet people are looking to the new El Nino on the horizon to drench California and help fix it. Other experts claim that this California returning to its normal weather patterns and that we have been living through a small “wet period” that has now ended. Even with all this disagreement with what is causing the drought most seem to agree on one thing, that we need to manage our water…
We observed about California drought. We planned to observe how California drought affected the farmer, because we thought that farmers used water to irrigate their farm, so California drought would affect them severely. We went to farmers market at Oakland. We met with many farmers there and asked several questions. We wanted to know how severe is California drought for farmers, what have they done regarding California drought and what are they going to do if the California drought got severe.…
2. The drought in California isn’t just a natural disaster but is also a man made one in another critical sense by capitalist governments largely beholden to giant energy cooperation 's refusal to seriously address the issue. Since the states founding in 1850 water policies have never been carried out in a rational scientific or democratic fashion, but rather subordinated to powerful corporate interests that include but are not limited to agribusiness, real estate, and finical aristocracy. 3. Two-thirds of California’s precipitation falls in the northern portion of the state, while two-thirds of all Californians live to the south.…
