I was born and raced in the Dominican Republic. In the Dominican Republic at list one member of each family has a family member that has immigrated to some part of the world. Our families immigrate in the search for better lives. In the Dominican Republic there is no such thing as ethnicity, or at least it is not important. Dominicans are not racist among each other; however, many discriminate against Haitians. Haitians often come to our island in the search for new opportunities; jobs, a place to live, among others. I have never understand how we, the people that immigrate to all over the world can mistreat our own neighbors because of the color of their skin. We have Chinese immigrants, Europeans, Puerto Ricans and many immigrants from Venezuela who we welcome and offer jobs to. This is one of the things that makes feel embarrass about the island I was born in.

When I first came to America I pictured a place where people’s dreams come true. I pictured a country of hope, unity and opportunities. I remember living in the Dominican Republic, and seeing American tourists and thinking of them as reach powerful people. For some reason I associated Caucasian with being

In an era where technology is so advanced and people is more educated racism persist. I truly thought having an African American for president was the end of racism. Nevertheless, it appears that it was a trigger for those than cannot stand what is different. The video shows a very powerful message. If one think that he/she is superior or better, he/she will have more confidence therefore the possibilities of doing better at things is bigger. While, if one thigs as inferior he/she will have more anxiety, there for have a harder time completing the same tasks. African Americans have battle this status of inferiority for centuries. Our society is like a statue, they both need the proper structure needed in order to keep it steady, but when one piece does not fit, then they will both topple down. Although statues may not relate to the problem, racism can relate to the one piece that does not fit, and this problem is explained in the articles " Black Men In Public Spaces", by Brent Staples, and " Is Everyone A Little Bit Racist" , by Nicolas Kristof. These articles dive into the topic of how racism affects everyday lives and how detrimental it is to the society and the people within. Also, it shows the unfortunate story of a victim of racism. Unless changes are made, racism will rule supreme in communities and there will be nothing for people to stop it.…

Some people come to America thinking their lives will dramatically change. Some might come from poor countries in hope of a new life and more opportunities that is given in America than back in their homeland. This thinking would lead on to them transforming themselves to become more “white-like” like white people. Almost everyone believes that the white population is the superior one out of everyone else. That’s why in the short story Looking for Work, by Gary Soto, it shows how Soto felt when he finds out that his family isn’t like what he calls “normal”.…

During World War II, Mexicans and Mexican-Americans were extremely discriminated against in America. Though they worked in the United States of America, and many even served our country in the military, society refused to accept them as equals. The same type of discrimination seems to have existed against a great number of different races in America’s history. Regardless of how much good one does for a country, any form of difference tends to override it. Rather than focus on the successes of the different races, America often just focused on the fact that they were different and, consequently, treated them as inferiors.…

With little experience and with less learning, I have been able to throw my thoughts hastily and imperfectly together; and trusting to your patient and generous indulgence, I will proceed to lay them before you. Frederick Douglass, What to a slave is the fourth of July. I thought what better way to start this paper then with a quote from Mr. Douglass, who states it best. I was astonished and amaze at what great strides and strength Mr. Douglass took to stand before a crowd of white men and women and address them about a day that signifies “freedom for them,” and to let them know what it means to the black community. With his words he would be able to remind them that they are a new nation that has made mistakes, as child does in their early…

White Privilege in America The United States of America is a nation built “by the (white) people for the (white) people” during a time in history when the vast majority of American citizen were white. The very foundations of American society and government are structured specifically to accommodate that, supplying advantages to whites over minorities. This systematic racism deep-rooted in the core of this country hindered the progress of colored people, harbored white superiority and created white privilege. Since its establishment in 1776, America has always been viewed as a predominantly white country.…

The United States of America has come such a long way from the racist acts towards African Americans. From the Voting Rights Act of 1965, to having an African American elected as president, the effects racism had on America seemed to be improving with every little step made. Although everything seemed to be getting better each day, the tables have turned, and history seems to be repeating itself. It was not as if they were making up how racism was a problem and that people were not treated equally in the eyes of the law. Producing the video definitely felt strange. However, reading aloud and then watching myself on my laptop deepened the meaning of what I was saying. Another lesson taken away from this assignment was the fact that there are no women’s rights organizations asking for the banishment of this book. Women were treated poorly in this book, which was also a fact of the past, and there seems to be no issue.…

During the 1900s, many African American people emerged in the public eye such as Martin Luther King, Jr and Malcolm X, who continued to fight for the equality of black people. In 2008, when Senator Barack Obama was the first black male to be elected to be the president of the United States, some people credit this time in history as the day racism died. They believe if Americans can elect a black person to run our country, racism against black people must be something of the past (Brunners, 2015). Almost immediately after becoming the president-elect, he started receiving threats and hate mail, purely because of the color of his skin (Neiwert, 2016).…

Racism has existed since the early 1600s when African Americans were first brought to America against their will to work as slaves. It wasn’t until the Civil Rights Movement, beginning in 1955, that the lives of African Americans started to transform and the U.S. Supreme Court began to terminate “Jim Crow” laws and ban segregation (“Civil Rights Movement,” n.d.). The main goal of eradicating segregation was to reach what is known as “racial equality”, which is the balance between all the races making everyone equal. Since the Civil Right Movement, our country has continued to make steps of improvement including, swearing in our nation’s first black president and the fact that black people and white people are now able to go to the same school.…

This shows that racism is still going on today. The racism that minorities receive is starting to spiral out of control. While living in Maine, it doesn’t really make a difference since most people are American as well. Traveling to other parts of the country has made a difference, like going to Boston or New York City they have some different ethnic groups. It also made a difference while I was in Mexico and Nicaragua that I was American and not one of them. It was about the same as me being white on how I was treated.…
