Race supremacy or the belief that one race is better than another, has started wars and led to death of many innocent people.World War II was a war against people who Nazi’s believed were an inferior race to Germans. In the past, we have seen people taken from their homes in Africa and forced to board ships to America and other countries to be sold into slavery. Even after slavery was abolished, African American’s still fought to have basic civil rights. In Invisible Man by Ellison, we see the struggle of Black man who feels undermined because of his skin color. ”But to whom can I be responsible, and why should I be, when you refuse to see me? And wait until I reveal how truly irresponsible I am. Responsibility rests upon recognition, and recognition is a form of agreement” (Ellison, 14). In this quote, he talks about how he does wrong by the world because he never has to accept responsibility for his actions since he is “invisible”. By that, he means that people do not care about him or black people and he has little power in the world. The way to make a change in society is through politicians, throughout history, there has been a lack of diversity in our government. When this issues came up in class, I enjoyed talking through them in an open discussion format. Instead of just hearing one opinion bombarding out the rest, we were all able to contribute our ideas and that is the best way to work through conflict. As far as my opinion goes concerning gender, I have always been comfortable in my own body and identifying as a woman. Even so, I cannot possibly put myself in someone else’s shoes, therefor I cannot speak for them. This is an issue left up to a person 's individual preference and all anyone else can do is be supportive. When it comes to race, I believe we all have underlying racism inside us even though not everyone wants to admit it. This is a cultural issue that can be fixed only through generations of acceptance. Instead of pinning people against each other, which can be the outcome of some protests, working together to conquer an issue that affects us all is the way to equality. Finally, speaking on the issues concerning the environment, I agree that it is important to take precaution to keep the earth, water, and animals clean and healthy. Afterall, without those elements, their would be no human race. More limitations should be put in place to prevent disasters like oil spills from happening. Prevention is key before it is too late and we are all breathing in gusts of smog and drinking toxic water. All
