As a Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN) representative, I have traveled to Massachusetts to discuss racial issues in America with hundreds of other MSAN students across the country. Our goal was to come up with solutions to resolve some of the issues we face in our hometowns. I brought back many perspectives and implemented schoolwide programs to reflect what I learned from other MSAN representatives. One issue that was prevalent in my many discussions about race, was the lack of resources for struggling, black students in schools. As a result, my peers and I began tutoring sessions in our library during our free periods. Their teachers noticed the significant improvement that our students made and recommended that even more of their students come to our tutoring sessions. Together, we led a city wide conversation with schools, corporations, and community members on how to address those issues on race. I spoke to people I would have never spoken to in my entire life and I heard every story under the sun. Some devastating, some uplifting, and many of the stories had beautiful lessons that I learned from. Interestingly. I was the youngest person there to share my story. I was a young leader at this event. When I went back to my school and shared my expererience, others wanted to tell their story too. I achieved my goal of encouraging people to speak openly about a topic that heavily affects our lives. That opportunity made me a role model, just like being in another program, R.E.A.L. Early College
