The United States of America has nearly 2.2 million incarcerated individuals. As years go by that number keeps increasing, not only because of the crime rate increasing but also from private prison companies making giants of profit from people being incarcerated. According to researches the two major private prison companies received alone three billion dollars in revenue each year. These companies are knows as the CCA and the GEO group. The more people are behind bars the more money these companies profit from. Another company that caught my attention was the Judicial Correction Services, basically a collection company. These companies are just abusing the individuals in our society. It doesn’t make any sense to me how they say, “Being poor …show more content…
In my opinion, race still matters in the United States. In the environment of crime and criminal justice it matters even more For example, in North Charleston, South Carolina the death of Walter Scott shot in the back while unarmed. Scenarios like the one of Scott just make the society worst. Many people were furious and became more violent towards cops because of incidents like this one. Now we find more of this situation happening more than ever, especially in communities of color. America just needs to come together and find ways to help racialized communities do better. These communities are less likely to find jobs and likely live in poor conditions. Racialized groups faces many encounters in their everyday life and fall below in life. This means they are more likely to live and work in poor circumstances, and just be targets of police …show more content…
After watching small video clips last week in class I was very impressed with the programs, housing first and the lead work. I believe that if we had more programs for people that come out of jail to reestablish their life it will benefit society. A lot of these individuals serve time in jail over nonsense and are labeled for the rest of their lives. Unfortunately the rich just want to get richer and that’s why many states don’t have these types of benefits for people. Many of companies make tons of revenue of people going to jail, it will be to their disadvantage if we place more programs to like lead work and housing first. A lot of these folks just need someone to guide them and be with them at all times. I as an American will love to see these programs incorporate in each state. This will create more professional jobs, such as, social workers, case managers, physiologist, etc. If we have more opportunity like this I believe that our crime, homeless, racism rate will drop

Incarceration The prison population has grown rapidly in the United States for the past thirty-five to forty years and it still continues to grow till this day. The growth in state spending on prisons and the criminal corrections has outpaced the growth of education spending. According to Steven Hawkins of the The American Prospect, he states that the prison population has grown exponentially from 500,000 to 2.3 million people in just three decades. Hawkins also shares that the United States almost spend $70 billion annually to keep adults in prison and jails, to confine youth in detention centers, and to supervise 7.3 million individuals on probation and parole. This rules create certain expectations however, not everybody has the same means to achieve those goals. Hence, the offender adapts to this certain goals such as the “American Dream” and finds alternative means available to him/her, which involves more often than not engaging in criminal activity, in order to achieve it. Additionally, criminals living in a socially disorganize place where poverty thrives have blocked opportunities which creates a subculture of violence which leads them to engage in alternative lifestyles and values that are deviant in society. This problem is seen more in lower class neighborhoods which have been socially isolated creating tons of disadvantages for them. Hence, there is only limited opportunities to achieve upward mobility, In order to resolve this problem, according to Wilson, it is to open up the opportunities for everyone so the “American Dream” is viable towards everyone using legitimate means in order to achieve it.…

It would drive our economy and cause businesses to boom. If more people have spending money then they are able to use that money at local businesses, which would help bring more money into the pockets of employers. The money people have, the more people will spend, which will most likely only help the employers in the long run. Many states also feel that the minimum wage is too low, 21 states have increased the minimum wage to well above the $7.25 federal wage. This is because many people understand how hard it is to live on that little of money.…

People in other countries will do the work for less and don’t mind working long hours because they need the money. Redirecting the jobs overseas causes layoffs in the United States and we find jobs being outsourced.…

Each one of these factors had a negative impact on the African American community. It forced them into poverty stricken areas, and did not let them out, even if the families could afford it. It took enormous effort for African American families to buy houses in the suburbs. Yet, citizens also benefited from these factors, and those that did not face racial discrimination were able to move into better housing communities or have their own house. The same people benefited from Keynesianism - they were receiving more job related rights due to unions, like higher wages.…

Within the article by George Packer, he states that “inequality will continue to mock the American opportunity for all.” As long as this inequality for the people in this country stays alive than the country will be overwhelmed by the rich and middle class as well as the poor will suffer drastically. People in America want to achieve success and chase the American Dream, which has eluded many immigrants and others for so long. If America keeps depriving the real hardworking people in America and not funding people who really deserve the money. Inequality within the country divides many of our society, which could result in many individuals living in America distant from one…
