In an essay “Up for Slavery by Washington T. Booker,” Washington knew what was ahead of him on his journey to Hampton Normal and Agriculture Institute to pursue a marketable skill that was useful in the society, but he never let his thoughts and setbacks get in his way. He walked several miles with a hungry stomach, slept by the roadside, but he was driven by his goal to get to where he really wanted to be. Washington 's journey was a big lesson to me. It showed that despite race or circumstances, persistence and perseverance are a key to success. The down sides can be related to the physical toll the job can take because having a frequent direct personal contact with people who are sick can lend the immune system to an onslaught of germs it never had to fight all at once.
