The doctor was very rude to us and stated to a nurse, “I do not understand why ‘those’ people keep coming here, because it is a waste of time”. I personally witnessed this – thankfully my client did not. It could have triggered a behavioral issue and created a great deal of emotional upset. I really wanted to say something to the physician, but I realized that I was not in the best position to address him. Instead, I chose to be professional, and file a complaint form. Some do not seem to understand that people who are mentally and intellectually disabled deserve to be treated with equal dignity and respect. What people with this perspective do not realize is that they are human just like us and we are no better than them; we could be in their shoes in a matter of seconds.
These experiences along with many others have provided me with some insight to why I am so motivated to pursue and further my degree in the Human Services field. I want to make a difference in the lives of those I support. I also want to be able to advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves and help those who cannot. Not only do I wish to make a difference in their lives, but I also want to make a difference in the world if given the opportunity. By obtaining a Master’s Degree in Human Services I can learn more about how to make the world a better
