There were many pulse points in Ilium, which made it hard to choose which points I wanted to focus on and analyze. Pulse points are probably different for every reader, but there were many parts of the story that were highly engaging which I felt propelled the story forward for me. Because Ilium is a braided narrative, it contained more pulse points than other single narrative stories. There is more than just one protagonist in the book, and so, there are several significant turning points in Ilium.

This is a significant part of the story line and one that I would definitely classify as a pulse point. Up until this point, the book has been introducing us to the characters and key players. The stage is being set and we get a glimpse of how Daeman, Ada, Harman and Hannah have been living everyday life. We are learning about how they interact with each other and how they are connected. In fact, Daeman has just been introduced to Harman and Hannah and we witness their first interactions at Harman’s birthday party. Daeman and Ada have not seen each other in years, and we also get a brief history of their relationship and we observe how they reconnect with each other. As the party continues, they engage in conversations that challenge how and why they’ve come to live this mundane existence consisting of parties and leisure time, which has mostly been provided by the servitors and voynix who cater to their needs. Daeman, who is only fueled by his lust for his cousin Ada, reluctantly follows them on their quest to find Savi. As we are introduced to Savi, it become clear that the story is going to take on a new direction. It is apparent that she has a rebellious nature and that she is very knowledgeable as well. We get the feeling that everything is about to change and we will not be following Daeman, Ada, Harman and Hannah through boring parties catered by the voynix and servitors. We get a sense that
