According to Warren and Smalley (2014) social stigmas may influence the desire of a rural area inhabitants desire to seek particular forms of health assistance (Warren and Smalley, 2014). These type of health assistance most avoided, due to social stigmas, are associated with mental health. Other results of social stigmas include the denial of those receiving treatment to receive support from family members, if they are diagnosed with an illness not accepted in rural areas.
According to Warren and Smalley (2014) behavioral norms may impact mental health; and the use of substance abuse among youth in rural areas (Warren & Smalley, 2014).
