Establishing a self-identity is the foundational support for achievement. Throughout my undergraduate education, it was continually stressed in establishing an artistic identity. Comparatively, I didn’t realize I would need to invent a self-identity as a therapist also. Honestly, I didn’t know what a therapist identity was when Skovholt indicated the term. “’Identity’ is a term to describe an internal subjective feeling and reality. It is a kind of internal clarity about oneself. It is a coming-into-focus process about the self as a therapist or counselor” (Skovholt, 2012, p. 121). Understanding is more than what is taught in our textbook and class discussions, but also through our experiences and surrounding practitioners. Skovholt revealed that though I will be training to become a professional, I am still a human. That my emotions may get stirred, that I will mess up at times, but that every professional has done the same. It is imperative to illuminate my personal challenges and keep them in mind, as well as my strengths. I know that compassion, honesty, and devotion will always come naturally. I recognize that I will also be challenged with each client, and with these challenges, I ought to be appreciative with the information I achieve
