The Influence Of Personality Psychology

Improved Essays
I am glad to have had the opportunity to read this paper for two reasons: firstly it is an area of psychology that I am interested in (to be more specific I am interested in the development of relationships and the potential impact personality may have on them). Secondly, it is a really solid research that adds a lot of useful information for future research. To confirm the point of views established by Wilson et al., it has always eluded me that personality was never really intensively studied in regards to friendship satisfaction (even more that there is very little research on establishing friendships in the first place) as it is one of the early developmental phase that occurs in an individual. As an individual develops thorough his lifespan, …show more content…
The scientific lack of research on the possible influence of both personality and friendship interactions/satisfaction is mind boggling in that aspect, I would add even stranger, when talking about teenagers or young adults (while I cannot speak for everyone, I can definitely say that in my personal experience, friends were a bid deal in my teen years and are still nowadays a big deal in my adulthood life). On that matter, I absolutely agree with the author 's statement that personality psychology should focus more on friendship satisfaction and will even state that they need to team up on development to further determine how personality may impact friendship development overall. Onto the second aspect of these reflection: the future potential for research this paper offers. As I said earlier, I truly believe that this study has a lot of good elements to it: not only does it confirm certain elements surrounding personality and friendship satisfaction, it also bring in a lot of good information about how to address both the study 's limitations and the potential leads this study could …show more content…
More specifically, I wish to see what traits in particular seem to contribute to a "quality" friendship over time. It would be interesting to be able to follow friendships that were formed during adolescence and see which traits have a strong impact in predicting the friendship satisfaction as well as overall strength, later on when being young adults. My guess would be that extravertness and agreeableness be the main indicators for overall lifetime friendship, but for some reason I have an intuitive sense that agreeableness may be a higher predictor of a longer sturdy friendship. This would be one research interest that I would see as a potential lead from the results of this paper. Additionally, I would also be interested in seeing if whether certain combinations of traits (for example, high introvert, low neuroticism and high agreeableness combination) may still impact friendship overall (would the friendship be strong, mediocre, or neutral?). This would be another potential aspect that I would be interested in seeing (or even better participate in). To conclude, I thought this study was truly interesting, no doubt because of my interest in the impact of personality and social interactions, but moreover because I think that this study was concise, careful and full of potential leads and information in regards to potential research. Constructing a friendship at the adolescent age should be quite simple. However, it seems as if the young adults struggle to find themselves a place in society. The inability for an individual to mature can lead to an immeasurable amount of loneliness. With maturity comes the need to embrace society and change. The unwillingness to do so tends to isolate individuals rather than associate them with the surrounding environment.…

Making friendships is important during adolescent years. “Adolescents who have close, stable, supportive friendships generally have a high opinion of themselves, do well in school, are sociable, and are unlikely to be hostile, anxious or depressed” (Papalia, 2015, p. 377). Friendships have many benefits and make a teen feel like they belong which is what most…

Friendship like other words that describe relationships, has a spectrum of degrees that describe the kind, quality and time invested into that particular relationship. In a world that seems to get smaller and smaller everyday due to its increasing connectivity to each other it seems inevitable that people would be more easily focused on the breadth and number of their relationships rather than the quality and depth of them. Because of this you could say that people nowadays are more likely to develop acquaintances and leave their relationship there at that end of the spectrum than before. As quoted in the article “What does ‘friend’ mean now?” it seems that Anthropologist Robin Dunbar would agree with my point of view.…

In this essay, I will compare and contrast Cocking and Kennett’s view with Thomas’s highly moralized view about the nature and value of friendships. Friendship is an important aspect to human life, and many philosophers attempt to understand it to its fullest. To compare the differing views of Cocking and Kennett to Thomas’s Highly moralized view, I will examine why each party believes that friendship is valuable, as well as discuss how morality is related to friendship. I will also determine which belief seems to be the most plausible of the two, and why.…

We all need friends. They care for us, even love us, and life without them would be very lonesome- just like the Creature’s, Robert Walton’s and Victor Frankenstein’s in Merry Shelley’s Frankenstein. Aristotle believes that there are three reasons why people become friends. Those are that the other person is good, useful, or pleasant (Aristotle 262). Furthermore, he distinguishes between a friendship where “two individuals recognize that the other person is someone of good character, and they spend time with each other, engaged in activities that exercise their virtues” (Kraut), a perfect friendship that two people of good character have who are equally virtuous (Aristotle 266), and an imperfect friendship where the people are just friends…

Unlike the modern definition of friends with benefits, friends with benefits have many forms of friendships and the benefits are more than just sex. From a reciprocal altruism point of view: reproductive and survival costs and benefits of opposite-sex and same sex friendships can be observed in humans. As our ancestors have lived in the past, without friendship certain tasks or social life would be difficult because a friend can provide fitness relevant benefits to us in several ways such as resources, cooperation, assistance, and mating opportunities. Both sexes acquired friendship from male and female to gain access to resources mentioned above. Forming friendship with an individual can be both beneficial and costly to ourselves.…

The opposing views of “nature versus nurture” have evoked an abundance of disagreements ever since the early years. Both sides of the debate theorize that every individual has different personalities. The “nature” aspect argues that our genes influence our character, while the “nurture” aspect argues that our environments influence our character. This controversial issue in psychology has convincing ideas from both perspectives, which is why it is still a widely talked issue by social scientists and psychologists today. The start of the famous debate dates back to the ancient Greek period, with well-known philosophers such as Plato who sided with nature and Aristotle who sided with nurture (The Earliest Psychologists), where the basis of these…

The question as to whether a man and a woman can just be friends is one that has been debated for many years. The question may be answered depending on when you were born and what the culture of friendship and dating were at the time. There have been many studies linked to friendship, including opposite-sex and same-sex friendship as described in the article, by April L. Bleske and David M. Buss, titled: Can men and women be just friends? This article discusses the methodology of two studies performed to test evolution-based hypotheses and their outcomes. Friendships in general can provide benefits to both parties as well as inflict costs.…

Personality refers to the emotional and physical environment or surrounding that influences the behavior or character of an individual. Through this, the consistent or stable behavior, attitude, interest and capabilities of a person are used to predict their reaction to particular circumstances. Personality development, therefore, is believed to be coined from two significant and contrasting theories, psychodynamic and social learning theories. The psychodynamic theory is among the first influential explanation that combines the genetic and biological forces together with an individual’s social experience in a bid to explain personality acquisition from childhood. It also tries to explain how an individual’s unsatisfactory childhood experience…

Best friends are a necessity, everybody has one no matter what or who it is. According to Albert Schweitzer, “In everyone 's life, at some time, our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit.” This quote is a great example of giving an idea of how much friends affect us and our well being.…
