Communication is essential in today’s business world, and with so many avenues of communication, one must consider many things when developing messages. Because information is being delivered via different methods all the time, the message writer must take care that their message is written clearly. To be an effective writer, one must first consider their audience. Secondly, the message should be relevant, grab the audience’s attention, and should be easy to understand. It is important that a message is planned and executed with respect for the audience.
One of the keys to effective communication is studying one’s audience. Knowing and understanding who you will be communicating to is one of the first steps in the writing process. Knowing the audience and determining their needs allows the writer to craft a message that appears to have been written specifically for them. For instance, a team may be tasked with creating a presentation for a new product. For a team to be successful, communication among the members is necessary. Interpersonal communication not only requires good verbal skills but also requires one to be able to listen effectively. There are four methods of effective listening. One of the methods, active listening, should always be used in conjunction with the other three methods (Bovee, 2013). According to Bovee (2013), to listen actively one must take care to keep an open mind to interpret the other party’s message and clearly understand their meaning. The communication process of speaking, listening, and showing respect helps the members of the team work as a well-tuned unit. Collaborating requires individuals to share a common goal, and without good communication skills, the team may never reach the desired
