In the neonatal nursing unit there are a large number of infants suffering in need of as much help as they can get. When I think of how much they have to go through just to live, it motivates me more to become one of their nurses. I recently read a Nursing journal article called “Extremely Preterm infant skin care” by Deanna E. Johnson APRN, NNP- BC, CWON. The actual journal was called Professional Growth and Development. Amongst this journal article, there was a few things in it that represented disciplinary research and writing practices of Nursing. There are also a few things that I learned from reading Janet Giltrow (author of Academic Writing) in the article too. Over time I have learned some things about the discipline of nursing research

Brogdon, she mentioned that nursing students are issued assignment that include gathering and analysis, case studies, critique of articles, literature review, and reflective writing. A Case study is a process or record of research that is analyzed and used over a period of time to come up with a thesis or a principal. When you give critiques of article you would simply evaluate a piece of literature. Literature reviews consist of describing, summarizing, evaluating, and clarifying a literature piece. Reflective writing is when you describe an event or interaction, with thoughts, feelings, and emotion. She said that it was important to them because it showed critical thinking, participation while learning, and the knowledge that has been produced. In the discipline of nursing writing, most publishers do not encourage the article to be shopped around to other publishers, being that they already considering publishing your work. There are basic standards for all publishing in nursing but they are not all the same requirement. Some publications require pure editing, which is reviewed by someone in the profession. It is said that sometimes they can be contested because even though some may be experts, they could seem as though they know less than the actual non-expert. In the discipline of nursing writing, knowledge deficit can be included to show the gap in the established knowledge that they have. It simply just justifies the present research project. The knowledge deficits come along with modality. Modality is when the researcher has a limit amount of knowledge about the subject and they have to make an inference, using the words “I think” and “seems”. In the article that I read there was an actual section where they labeled it “Rational/assumptions”. In this section they didn’t use the words “I think” because they wanted the audience to believe they was high sure that they were right.
