The Importance Of Proctoring

A “proctor” can be defined as “an impartial individual appointed to monitor or supervise a student during their examinations” (Office of Student Services, personal communication April 21, 2016) to ensure the exam is completed with academic integrity. “Proctoring” therefore refers to the act of invigilating a student during his or her exams, and a proctored exam is one that is done with a supervisor present.

University of the People (2015) requires degree-seeking students to sit a minimum of eleven proctored exams in order to attain their degree, and requires this most likely to lend credibility to the qualification, as the proctor will be able to validate the identity of the student, and ensure the student does not cheat during the exam.

He or she must also be uninvested in how well the student does on the exam, so as to ensure the proctor does not allow the student unfair advantages during the test.

If the student cannot find a suitable proctor, the student may use a third-party proctoring service, such as ProctorU.

To register a proctor, we have to click on the “add a proctor” link that is available next to proctored courses during the course registration period. The link will prompt us to enter contact and occupational details about the person we have chosen as our proctor. We obviously only register a proctor if we are registering for a proctored course, and will be responsible for keeping their information up to date so that they receive correspondence from the university in a timely manner.

One of the people I am considering to be my proctor is my mentor at work, who has helped me navigate and learn my way around the craziness at work. He is, of course, over the minimum age, and has no other connections to University of the People than me. We work together, and live in the same town, so it will be easy to coordinate exam times and locations, and he gains nothing from me doing well in my
