Living in a diverse community I have the privilege of being able to include aspects of my culture in to my daily life without any restrictions, I have the freedom to integrate my culture into the Canadian culture without fear of alienation or acceptance. This allows me to live my everyday life as a Canadian Women but also allows me to have my Pakistani culture be a part of my Canadian identity. Unfortunately this is acceptance is not given to everyone living in Canada, the prime example being the Indigenous People of Canada. “The role of social work in the lives of Aboriginal Peoples” by C. Baskin (2015) talks about The Indian Act of 1876 which was created to assist in the cultural genocide of Aboriginals, “this act imposed White, capitalist, patriarchal governance structure on Aboriginal People and attempted to eradicate Aboriginal values through education and religion” (p.211).
