An Analysis Of Covey Private Victory's Seven Habits

Improved Essays
To Stephen Covey Private Victory is broken down into seven habits, but first I am going to tell you about the first three, 1. Be proactive, 2. Begin with the end in mind, and 3. Put first things first. Covey uses the example of a personal bank when it comes to how someone feels about themselves. According to Tim Boon’s book, there are things that someone must consider to be either their deposits or their withdrawals in their personal bank accounts. Some examples of that would be to be “honest with yourself” (personal bank account deposit) or to “be dishonest” with yourself. This is important when it comes to someone’s personal victory because before you can even win in the public, you must first win in private with yourself. When someone is …show more content…
This means to decide which values and goals are the most important to you and then taking the steps to make them happen (Tim Boon, p. 5). When you can set your priorities, then you will have tunnel vision on that goal. All three of these habits are vital to being an effective person because they focus on first the individual. When you are confident in yourself and in what you have going on, then it makes it easy for you to help others when the time is needed. In a group setting, you are better at focusing on the goal and reaching that goal is something that you know will happen because of how you have set up your …show more content…
By this, Covey means that “the whole is greater than the sum of its parts (Prof. Toland, lecture).” When all the other habits are working together then this habit happens. I want to focus on synergy in communication because Covey believes that for this to happen there must be high trust and high cooperation. When there is low trust and low cooperation then there will be defensive communication. Defensive communication is when someone thinks win/lose or lose/win. This is not a part of being an effective person because your win/win mindset is gone and will only lead to something negative. Then there is medium trust and medium cooperation which is better than defensive communication, but it leads to respectful communication. In this case, there is room for compromise and understanding of both parties, but when someone has both high trust and high cooperation then both parties can come to an agreement where everyone is

The screamfree.com website offers advice on how to respond to almost any type of situation as opposed to reacting (Runkel, 2017). Strangely enough, the straightforward message on how “peace begins with a pause,” specifically hit home (Runkel, 2017). Moreover, it brought memories to mind that most of my thirties were spent attempting to find solutions to obstacles by springing into action without thought to the consequences. Although, fortunately, during my early forties I was blessed with receiving parenting classes that taught the value in taking the time to consider the details before giving a commitment to the many questions that children might ask. Accordingly, the screamfree.com website and the parenting classes coincide closely with communication in the workplace.…

Throughout the last few years I have had many experiences that have shaped me into someone and provided me with many traits that could allow me to become a great Marine. Yet, the three that stand out the most would be that I always persevere to get the job done, I always make sure I do what is right for my peers and not just for me, and I make sure that I help others to achieve the tasks at hand in the easiest way possible. First, I’d like to talk more about how I persevere to accomplish the tasks I am faced with that make me a great problem solver for the Marine Corps. I do this by pushing myself past my limits and past my breaking points and in doing so I make it farther than I normally thought wouldn’t be possible. It is the mindset I use both in the classroom and in athletics because when…

Having started the People and Organization module, in the first week of seminar, forming a group was necessary, as it was a discussion based activity, but unknowingly it helped me form my group for the Junction Hotel presentation. The aim behind this piece of writing is to reflect upon the process and the formation of my group. Reflection is ‘... a form of mental processing with a purpose and/or anticipated outcome that is applied to relatively complex or unstructured ideas for which there is not an obvious solution’. (Moon 1999 pg.23). Moon (1999) also states that we reflect for many reasons; important reasons being to critically review our behavior and that of others.…

There are several methods that increase the performance of groups. One of the many methods is the building of group efficacy - it is defined as the group members’ collective estimate of their ability to perform a specific task (Gibson, 1999). Group efficacy is likely to affect a group’s commitment, the manner in which they work together, their resilience in the face of difficulties, and their overall performance (Bandura, 1997). Bandura (1997) proposes four sources of information that are believed to lead to the development of self-efficacy. The first of these is an individual’s past performance - both past successes and failures - will have a strong effect upon one’s self efficacy.…

Communication is what connects us to the other people in the world. Someone that has decent communication skills is likely to have positive relationships; whereas if an individual is a poor communicator, at that point when the person tends to feel misunderstood, isolated, also has trouble forming strong connections with people that surround them (Cordner, 2016). Some steps in an excellent communication are to become present and to listen to the other person and thinking about how the other person will perceive the exposition, body language, to engaging in the conversation, also proactive active, constructive communication. Therefore, if we desire a strong, healthy connection, we must engage with the individual or individuals that a person…

My thoughts on human nature can best be summed up by the character Sirius Black in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: “We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on, that’s who we really are.” Our ability to critically think about our behavior and make choices is what makes us human and sets us apart from our hominid ancestors. In fact, as far as other species are concerned, there is no concept of “good” and “evil”; there is predator and prey, threatening and safe, dominant and submissive. Morality is not a factor at play in the animal kingdom.…
