Parents know their child better than anyone. I could administer many different assessments and spend a certain amount of time with a student each day, but I will never get the same information as I would from talking with the student’s parent. Parents deserve to be involved in planning a transition plan for their son or daughter. Many students who receive special education services are dependent on their parents and will need their parents care and support after high school so it extremely important that the parents are involved and have a say in the transition plan for their son or daughter. As soon as a student on my caseload enters high school, I will address the transition plan to the parents at the IEP meeting. That way we can create a plan that they believe will be beneficial and appropriate for their child early on in their high school career. Parents want the best for their child so it is important to give the parents information and resources that they can go to for any questions they might have about transitioning their child. Keeping the parents involved and having them participate in the transition plan for their child will help the parents feel more comfortable about their child leaving high
