The media talks about Lebron James, Kobe Bryant, Derrick Rose, Kevin Durant, and other popular athletes signing million dollar contracts. Yet most sports enthusiasts never stop to think, “Wow! That’s a lot of money”. Why do athletes get paid so much? Why is someone worth millions of dollars?” (Wilbon). Popular sports athletes deserve million dollar salaries, because these are the players we watch, we cheer for, we buy jerseys, t- shirts, and shoes from. ESPN is one of the biggest television channels in the world, it has to be in the top 3 most viewed TV programs in the United States (Griffin). Without them there would be no entertainment. Like UNC vs Duke basketball/football. People will camp for weeks in extremely bad weather conditions. People love big rivals of sport teams the thrill of their team winning and rubbing it in another fan 's face. UNC vs Duke is the biggest rival on ESPN. Some may agree, and most of them make a compelling point as to why they shouldn’t. Some of these points are because the athletes get paid already in scholarships and specific aids. As Rebecca Zissou states in the article, “Fair Play: Should College Athletes Get Paid?” "Many top players receive tuition, books, tutoring, housing, meals, clothing, elite coaching, medical care, travel expenses, and career counseling. " What she fails to mention is that most of these things that the athletes receive only cover a small portion of the actual whole cost of living and learning, and being sheltered, and traveling; the list could go on.…

Many Division 1 athletes can receive up to $60,000 multiyear scholarships and some Division 2 athletes can receive partial scholarships. They are getting these scholarships to help pay for an education because most of them can’t afford to go to a Division 1 or Division 2 school. Also these players are bringing in money for their schools by TV contracts, advertising, merchandising and ticket sales. The top men’s basketball and football teams can bring in about $140 million a year and by doing that, it can help them have those scholarships. Another reason I don’t think that college athletes should get paid, is because they are getting a free education…

A lot of people would disagree with me when I say soldiers shouldn’t make more money than athletes, but i assure you I can turn them into believers. It would take too much money for the government to pay soldiers as much money as athletes are paid. Also anybody can sign up to be a soldier. It takes a lot of skill and dedication to be an athlete. Lastly if the government started giving people a lot of money everybody will want to join.…

Many people have recently raised controversy on the subject of whether college athletes should be paid or not. College athletes should not be paid for their performance on the field. The student athletes should not be paid to play because they are in school for education, this could cause issues for colleges with auctioning, this can cause money problems for the student athletes, and sports are not a job they are a choice. Unfortunately what critics lack to admit is that normal student’s face these same issues, being involved in on campus clubs and other ordeals those normal students face no one truly has a lot of time to get a job. Athletes have built in connections that non-athletes do not have, so being on an athletic team is by far more advantageous then simply being a student. So why should student athletes be the only students benefitting monetarily for their hard work (College Athletes). No one is enslaving nor, “forcing these athlete-students to play football. Don't hand me the garbage about it being their only opportunity in life.…

No, they should not because they are already getting scholarships, the colleges might not be able to afford to pay them, and because playing the sport is not a job.
