The Pros And Cons Of Polluting The Environment

Imagine the world without foul smells of garbage lying on the floor and foggy skies from public transportation. Humans are known to have the most advanced brains but do they really show that when they are polluting the environment and causing drastic changes to the ecosystem. “Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa P. Jackson wrote in the Wall Street Journal. ‘Pollutants like mercury, smog and soot are neurotoxins and killers that cause developmental problems and asthma in kids and heart attacks in adults.’”(Chesser). By humans polluting the world they are not only hurting the ecosystem but what lives on it including themselves. Environmental regulation is necessary because it can curb pollution, global warming, save plant and animals …show more content…
Land, water, air, etc. are was is being polluted by everyday garbage. “Pollution is the process of making land, water, air or other parts of the environment dirty and unsafe or unsuitable to use” (Bradford). Land and soil are the ground to which garbage reaches first and even sometimes the soil is contaminated by an overflow of garbage that is buried. Chemical are often buried or hidden from the public eye and although it is “hidden” chemical in the soil can still do much harm to the environment. Many times factories or building are abandoned and just labeled as a hazard zone because of the chemicals. People are blocked from the site but the chemicals still pollute the ground and air. An example of this is seen in the book Friendswood, where a mother, Lee, is now determined to find the reason of her daughter 's sudden death. Friendswood is a novel that takes places in Friendswood, Texas. She realizes that the reason her daughter and many other kids died was because there was a chemical site that was hazardous and even though it was blocked off the chemicals was pollution the people in …show more content…
Air pollution is caused when more chemicals and gasses are higher than what is needed on earth. “Another common type of air pollution is dangerous gasses, such as sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and chemical vapors. These can take part in further chemical reactions once they are in the atmosphere, creating acid rain and smog. Other sources of air pollution can come from within buildings, such as secondhand smoke” (Bradford). Without noticing US cities like New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles have a high amount of air pollution because of all of the public transportation, buildings, and smokers. These objects cause many illnesses and actually kills people every year. Approximately 2 million people die a year because of air pollution

Greg Graffin, a lead singer of the band “Bad Religion,” once said, “ So much of the habitat destruction and pollution is based on the simple principle that we somehow have been given free license over other species to degrade the planet.” Even though he’s speaking his mind, he makes a valid point about how we’ve been dumping our trash in the ocean and allowing factories to release gases and polluting our air. I am one of those people who cares about our oceans, the sea life in those oceans, and the very air we are breathing. None of these environmental problems should be happening and all because people want to make a quick dollar.…

We have a major role when it comes to the sustainability of the environment we live in today. Now, that we all have more knowledge about the world and how it works we all should understand that each of our action have their own consequences. You would think by us knowing how much we are contributing to ruining the world we all love people would change their ways, but we don’t because we all are very selfish. The most direct way that we are impacting the ecosystem is by polluting it.…

The book titled the Pollution Paradox, by Bregman Lenormand, is all about the effects of pollution. Bregman first starts his book off by stating who the real villains are in the crime of pollution. Suspects of the crime are the chemical industries, cities, and even the cherished automobiles. However, these are only contributors to the problem of pollution. In fact, the true villain in the crime of pollution is us; people. Every person shares a little responsibility of our generation’s pollution. However, another culprit to the crime is nature. According to Bregman, “even nature, with its virtues and beauty, injects undesirable and harmful ingredients into the atmosphere.”[1] Example of nature’s contribution includes, dust, silt, volcanic gas…

As the human population grows so do the industries and factories that supply goods and services to those people. More products being made means more pollution to the air, water, and soil. The amount of chemical waste generated in the US alone is over 4 billion pounds according to the Story of Stuff (Leonard, 2007). This huge amount of chemicals generated is mostly due to industry and mass production factories and not the individual. When people live closely together each individual may only pollute a small amount but when every individuals ' actions are put together the damage we are doing to the Earth is far beyond repairable. Hardin states in his article Tragedy of the Commons, "The rational man finds that his share of the cost of the wastes he discharges into the commons is less than the cost of purifying his wastes before releasing them. Since this is true for everyone, we are locked into a system of 'fouling our own nest '” (Hardin, 1968). Pollution is just one consequence of the growth of the human population. The way we handle where we put toxic substances can be defined as an act of environmental racism. Many of the toxic dump sites in urban areas are often found in locations where the residents are low-income families and/or minorities. In Bell 's book An Invitation to Environmental…

The vast majority of people that have lived on the planet in some way or form have contributed in the process of destroying the environment. One author, Rachel Carson wrote the novel “Silent Spring” which caused a lot of controversy amongst people today on how humans are destroying the environment and causing evolution to occur because of their actions. Although there are people that believe we are bettering the environment by developing modern technology, the amount of resources being used there will soon be nothing left to use. The main actions that are destroying the environment are Pollution, Overpopulation, Technology, Exploiting resources.…

Global warming and pollution has increased rapidly throughout the past couple years. Some of it has to do with air pollutants such as fossil fuels, and others has to do with disposing waste and other substances in lakes, rivers, ponds, etc. There are many factors that can cause global warming and pollution but who causes it all? I believe that everybody contributes to pollution and we should be the ones to blame. But we should also blame the major corporations and other industries that do this as well. In fact, corporations are the cause of two-thirds of man-made global warming. Consumers such as you and I, need to address these concepts to the government and other corporations so that they can become aware of what they are doing to our environment. We need to use…

The environment, along with its protection and issues connected with it are questions of interest nowadays. Many people are concerned with the state of the earth and our destructive impact on nature itself. Because of the slow change our environment is undergoing, many have failed to realize that this is even a problem. In, “An Inconvenient Truth,” Al Gore explains, “If a frog is put into a container of water that slowly increases in heat, it will stay there until it... Gets pulled out of the container. But if you put the same frog into a container with water that is already boiled it will jump out.” With the change of the environment moving ever so slowly, people need to start recognizing that they have to change their lifestyle to prevent…

It describes what the five things are and how they cause pollution. Then it goes over how these five different pollutants affect the soil. The five causes this article presents are: industrial activity, agricultural activity, waste disposal, oil spills, and acid rain. Industries such as the refineries pollute the air. Agricultural activity such as farmers using pesticides on the crops to get rid of animals can be harmful to different animals and humans who might breath the air around those areas. Waste disposal can cause large amounts of pollution. We have a perfect example of this right in Cahokia. There are giant landfills there that are constantly being dumped into. This cannot possibly be good for our environment! Like I stated earlier, accidental oil spills can be harmful. These killed plenty of fish by polluting the water they lived in. Acid rain will harm the crops that it falls on. All of this can give our group ideas about how we are going to go about creating pollutants for our crops. This research gives us different ideas about how plants are polluted so we can give the best examples for our…

Nevertheless, our responsibility is to do our best in alleviating the causes and effects, because we pay the price ultimately. For example, air pollution contributes to the dreaded acid rain; acid rain not only devastates agricultural crops, it also pollutes ninety percent of waterways and a large portion of arable soil. In Fact, “environmental degradation cost [China] nine percent of its Gross National Income in 2008”, a number that is quite unacceptable. Since many waterways are now considered wastewaters, that water traveling across the country is spreading the pollution, triggering a chain reaction. Ecosystems are largely affected, as each system relies on the other to thrive. But with these ecological systems pushed off of their natural balance, pollutants are now making their way to the vegetation, the wildlife, such as fish and other delicate marine life, the soil, and underground water tables, in which we heavily rely on to irrigate our agricultural plants and to provide us with potable water. Fish are dying and washing up ashore, and crops are not growing to their fullest potential; therefore, this has contributed to food insecurity as a consequence. Ironically, the smog is so thick, that a spectator would have a difficult time seeing the coal factories ahead, or worse yet, their own feet. How bad is the situation, you might wonder? Well, the…

Pollution is a term used to describe mostly particles that are harmful in the air. Many things can cause pollution weather they be human like riding the car instead of taking the bus or natural phenomena like the eruption of a volcano. Pollution can come in many forms; they can be in tiny solids ranging from a few microns to gases floating around in the atmosphere. A recent study shows that pollutants less than 10 microns in diameter are in correlation with people dying of lung and heart diseases. Even today things like coal are being burned for their precious energy content mainly to produce the electricity we so fervently need. Coal which causes a lot of pollution is also used to refine what we use today like gasoline and metals. Although…
