There are three major political parties in the United States that people affiliate themselves with: Democrat, Republican, or Independent. As a rule of thumb, “Republicans are significantly less liberal, and Democrats significantly more liberal, than candidates who are independents” (Deckman, 2006:102). With regards to this text and the data being used, reference to the Democratic and Republican Parties will be employed, while the Independent Party has been excluded. Political party affiliation will be examined based on those in the Democratic and Republican Parties because the majority of Americans identify with one of the two dominant parties.
The purpose of this paper is to examine the relationship between sex and political party affiliation and how this relationship differs throughout the social classes. Having a large sample that is representative of the entire population makes these results generalizable on a national level.
