Personality Test Disadvantages

Personality tests, such as the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), are very commonly used in career counseling. They have found to be very beneficial in this process and many studies of different work fields have shown commonalities between personality types in the field and preparing to enter the field. This paper will explore how specifically the MBTI is used to positively benefit people attempting to join the workforce to finding a career that suits them.
Myers-Briggs has been one of the most popular forms of personality test when used in career counseling and has been shown to be correct in most instances. Through an in-depth self-inventory, it catalogues a person’s strengths and weaknesses and then identifies a personality type that

Often these tests allow people to see a great deal of insight into themselves. By getting to see their strengths and weaknesses, it gives them the chance to build on their strengths and to help overcome their weaknesses. These tests are also helpful for building a baseline of what careers may be open to a person if they do not have a career of interest. Many of the tests are easy to access and are provided free on the internet and provide information on how to approach the education side of entering the career field. On the other hand, by being provided a limited amount of options a student may see them and not see their chosen profession for the future and feel disheartened that they may not be right for it. Instead of continuing toward it they may settle for something lesser.
