To understand positive behavior systems we must first understand what a behaviour is. A behavior is an action to communicate an individual's needs. “PBS promotes changes in behavior, skills and quality of life that are valued by the individual receiving support…” (Brown, Anderson, (2015) p.4). Understanding who the person is, and what they desire is essential to making positive behavioural approach more effective. “PCP is a process through which the strengths, wishes, future goals and support needs of an individual are identified” (Holburn, 2002; Mount, 2000; O’Brien & O’Brien, 2002; (Brown, Anderson, (2015) p.74). Using person centered planning is the most effective way of creating the best plan of action for the individual, knowing why someone behaves the way they do is very important for our field. Discovering someone's talents, gifts, and strengths are key to changing the individual’s quality of life. Being able to think outside the box and having the ability to find different ways through both PCP and PBS, brings me the greatest delight. I’m a creative person and love trying new things. By getting to know personally and understanding these behaviors I’m able to come up with a unique individualized plan created for the person and by the person.
