Field Experience at Wildwood and Ernest Manning My cohort of ten was assigned to visit two schools over a two-week period with a full week dedicated to each location. The two schools were Wildwood elementary and Ernest Manning high school and while their relative closeness to one another would suggest that some Wildwood students may eventually be at Ernest Manning, they are opposites in terms of their status, how they carry themselves, and what they believe to be most important for students. Wildwood elementary is an old school as observed from its small and outdated architecture. Classes are small and at times claustrophobic, especially when packed with 20-25 of the nearly 600 students making it difficult if not impossible to navigate the…

As much as the questions in the common assessment attempt to assess students’ common knowledge and progress, they fail to be objective and should be clearer. The semantics of questions vary upon how they’re interpreted. Also, what seems to be reasonable turns out to differentiate with the established answer choices in many cases. Along with that, with the state of being subjective, more than one answer choice can be correct. In the English 1 - Unit 5 Common Assessment, a letter is provided for the readers to analyze and base answers of given questions with.…

In my Methods and Assessment Courses I have learned to understand the different purposes and basic concepts of assessment to be prepared to assess ESOL learners that are standards-based. These assessments should be fair, valid, reliable and practical, as well as, assess what has been taught and learned to inform further instruction. As an effective teacher, I should be aware of cultural and linguistic biased assessments that would be invalid measures of what ELL students know and can do. Unfamiliar formal testing situations and conditions may also be challenges that I need to be aware of and identify for my students. These challenges include timed tests, multiple choice, and bubble sheet formatting.…

In an assessment of my ability to give and receive feedback can be found to be challenging at times. I found that you need to give advice that assists in helping the other individual grow in their knowledge base without bringing in our own potential biases. In looking at myself as a whole, I know I may hold different biases that may be different from someone else which may cause potential conflict. I know that it is also important to use identifying areas that are needed to improve and areas in which the individual that you are giving feedback to excel in. I think that it would also have been useful to see what other resources students used to help the students with the revisions, for example, dictionaries, textbooks, etc. I think that the different resources students used to help each student could also have an impact on how well students are giving feedback to each student. The results of the study make sense especially reading the questionnaires from the students because I think that the less-proficient students were learning from the more-proficient students. The less-proficient students had area to improve and had a “mentor” to increase their proficiency. While the more-proficient students, although they did have a slight improvement in their learning, they did not feel like they were able to improve much with just their peers.…
