The need for risk management is apparent in the practice of Emergency Medicine. In emergency medicine there is a higher likelihood for mistakes and dissatisfaction. Patients are at great risk. Emergency rooms provide care to patients with various injuries and illnesses, around the clock 365 days a year. The number of patients seen each day and the condition of the patients varies day to day. In an emergency room setting patients may become anxious and impatient. There is virtually a non-existent relationship between the staff and the patients. Critical decisions often take place in the emergency room. Language and literacy barriers adversely affect patients in a health care setting tremendously. When a patient has a language barrier, decision making regarding medical care, the ability to follow directions for prescribed drugs, and the ability to comprehend the full range of services that may be offered are hindered. Many people affected by language barriers are not willing to admit that they do not fully understand a language or that they are not able to read. Due to a lack of communication, as illustrated in the case study patients to receive inadequate or incorrect care. They may even be hospitalized. Language barriers and low literacy create a higher level of anxiety and greater lack of understanding. Patients with a language barrier may not provide accurate medical history. Furthermore, they may not understand a medication’s use and side effects of the medication. Language barriers affect the workflow of the employees. The time required to deliver care may increase due to the need for interpreters. Doctors may feel that it is difficult and time consuming to explain treatments and administer them to patients with language barriers. There are several ways to handle language barriers. The use of interpreters is always an option. Although interpreters are costly and time consuming. Families that are fluent in English could become more involved. …show more content…
They should be responsible for leading the projects to ensure that they are effectively implemented. It is crucial that risk management concepts be introduced to all staff members. Frontline staff should give priorities to high risk and high volume areas. Sharing relevant information with the staff is a great motivator. It is important to identify problems and crate solutions.
