Leadership Observation Of The Nurse Leader At Parkview Regional Medical Center

During my leadership observation, I shadowed the nurse leader on the fourth floor of Parkview Regional Medical Center. She was the leader for the ortho-neuro trauma unit, which cares for patients with neurological and or musculoskeletal issues and those who have had surgical procedures that affect the nerves or bones of the body. The unit takes both acute and stable patients. When asked what the staff to patient and patient care tech to patient ratios were, the nurse leader replied that the staff to patient ratio was normally four to five patients per nurse and nine to twelve patients per care tech. The types of staff members found on the floor were registered nurses and patient care techs, with students performing clinicals on the floor as …show more content…
Dieticians plan meals for the patient, and physicians assess, diagnose, and prescribe treatments for patients. Physical therapy assists the patient with restoring mobility and function (“Who are Physical Therapists?”, 2015). Occupational therapy help patients to become stronger in performing daily activities (“What is Occupation Therapy?”, 2016). Speech therapy works with patients to strengthen speech and swallowing abilities and can assess a patient’s need for thickened liquids. Case managers work with the patient’s insurance company to get coverage for their care. Nurse practitioners can diagnose illnesses and prescribe some medications just like physicians can (“What’s an NP?”, 2012). Radiology technicians transport patients to the radiology department for CT scans, MRI scans, and X-rays if they cannot be taken by a radiology technician using a portable machine in the patient’s room. Surgeons consult on and perform surgeries on the patient, while the pharmacy distributes patient medications to the nurse for administration, and housekeeping cleans the patient’s …show more content…
I like the idea of including others in discussions because it allows everyone to voice their ideas and opinions, which can result in ideas that everyone agrees with. Communication moves down the chain of command to other RNs, LPNs and techs and up the chain of command to supervisors (Henry et al., 2016). It may take experience to develop my leadership skills, but I can work on delegation as a nurse to help me with assigning tasks as a leader. My own experience on the floor will help me to relate to other nurses and will help me to gain experience in collaborating with other members of the healthcare team. Whoever my nurse leaders are, I can watch what they do for more examples of a good leader, since every person is different. My main goal as a leader will be for me to hear everyone’s opinions and their sides to conflicts that they are involved in. I hope one day I can be up to the challenge to be a nurse leader
