Significance to Nursing Identifying and meeting the needs of family members in the ICU are an important aspect of family-centered care. Addressing the concerns of patients’ families can lead to an improvement of family satisfaction. Family members of patients in the ICU can often be a source of stress for nurses and other members of the healthcare team. Meeting the needs of the family members can result in the reduction of stress, consequently reducing the stress on the healthcare team and fostering quality care.
Significance to DNP Essentials In 2006, the American Association of Colleges of Nursing developed the Essentials of Doctoral Education for Advanced Nursing Practice which outlines the competencies of nurses who practice at the doctoral level. The DNP student will educate the nurses of the ICU and advocate for the needs of the family members of patients in the ICU. Essential VI: Interprofessional Collaboration for Improving Patient and Population Health Outcomes. This essential embodies the core of the project. The purpose of the project is to educate the ICU nurses of a strategy to improve communication with the family members of the patients in the ICU. This will require effective communication and collaborative skills in order to foster successful effect of the intervention. Essential VII: Clinical Prevention and Population Health for Improving the Nation’s Health. The purpose of the DNP project represents this essential. The DNP student will develop, implement and evaluate a targeted educational intervention addressing the needs of family members of patients in the ICU. Meeting these needs leads to the improvement of satisfaction and ultimately improving patient outcomes. Essential VIII: Advanced Nursing Practice. In this project the DNP student will educate ICU nurses to develop and maintain therapeutic relationships and partnerships with the family members of those they are caring for in order to provide optimal care and outcomes.
