Sports are actually very beneficial in a child’s life. Athletes are known to do better in school, athletes have better group work skills, and sports offer many health benefits (University of Missouri). Based off of these reasons, it’s pretty clear about, on why parents would want their children to participate in athletics. However, a kid does not need to succeed in a sport in order for them to get these many benefits. This is what parents don’t understand. Once their child becomes active in a sport, parents typically feel the need to push them further and further until they’re the best one on the team. This is where all of the negative effects, previously discussed, come into play. Even though sports themselves are not a bad thing, parents that force their kids into playing them without their consent is very harmful to the child’s emotional growth. Parents should much rather care about if the kid is having fun rather than if the team wins or loses.
