Summary: The Influence Of Parenting

Parents and caregivers have a great deal of influence on their children and their behaviours. Based on their parenting techniques, the amount of trust between said child and parent, and the attitudes they portray in day to day life, children will act accordingly. These lessons and teachings are carried over into adulthood, influencing how they act in society, and how they will in tern act with their own children. Some parents are too involved in their child’s life, causing them to “push away” by acting out. Other parents are barely involved, if at all, which can actually have the same, or similar, effect. Parenting is all about finding a middle ground that works for both them and their children. A level of mutual respect and trust needs to be established, boundaries must be set, and freedom must be given accordingly.

To put yourself in the shoes of an eleven year old just beginning grade six; a position we have all been in and can relate to. And then to imagine your parents taking you to another, strange, land, and a war zone at that! It’s an unreal position that not many people can say they’ve been in. By making the reader imagine that this little boy, Omar Khadr, is them, the point gets across much more effectively. Omar Khadr was raised to be a terrorist, but Sean Fine wants us to understand that an eleven year old does not chose, on their own, to become such a thing! In the following paragraph, Sean Fine has the reader imagine themselves as another young man, Christopher Simmons. Who, like Omar Khadr, was shaped into a deviant by the lack of love and attention from his parents. A human being can only take so much before they
