I was born into a selfish extended family that was incredibly hungry for money and land; not only that my father had an affair which lead to my family consequently harassing my mother about not having the income to support her children, this clearly proved that we where an unnecessary obstacle in their lives. Thankfully my Grandmother having already been well established in the United States had great means and resources to bring us here. As I explained my situation to her, she responded with an answer that was like music to my ears: "you can go to college, and to not let anybody tell you any different." Finally, it was like part of me could breathe again. Being already part of a minority that has obstacles obtaining higher education, it is burdensome when it comes to not being properly documented. I took immense time to research scholarships aimed for undocumented students to which I could apply, but because I am not the only dreamer, scholarships were not granted to me. Me already being a high performing student I knew that there were other undocumented students that where performing better than me. This year I have seen my best friends attend college. I was the only one in my academy class that did not attend college, the ones who should have no reason to not attend college due to their great academic performance. Not attending college has not killed my dreams I am still fighting to make them a reality, beginning the process of scholarships applications all over

Due to the fact that I am constantly sending my mother and household money in order to contribute to their survival, I have been working two part-time jobs while still being a full-time student in order to make my needs to be met as well.…

Growing up I faced many obstacles coming from an immigrant family. Never did I think I could overcome the obstacles and say that the little girl who went to one of the worst rated elementary schools in the area was now a rising senior at George Mason University. I grew up with both my parents and three sisters, and in my eyes we were an average “normal” family. I never saw my parents struggle or felt like I was missing anything, and not until I was older did I understand our situation. I did not fully grasp that my parents were “different” because they were immigrants until I realized they could not help me with my homework, engage in a conversation with my teachers, nor participate in all the things my classmates parents did.…

Michael Jordan once said, “Obstacles don’t have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don’t turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” Being born to two immigrants, who have never completed college, and growing up in a low-income family of six individuals, I have faced nothing but a myriad of obstacles in my life. Although at times I have struggled to overcome these challenges, I have always persevered and pushed past each one with my determination to be the best I can be, which has matured me into the young adult I am today.…
