The Importance Of Orion In Greek Mythology

Improved Essays
My favorite constellation is Orion. I feel that way, because, I find it one of the most interesting stories in Greek Mythology. It is located on the celestial equator, and is one of the most recognizable constellations in the night sky.

Once upon a time, there was a great hunter, named Orion. He was the son of Posioden and could walk on water, because of that. One day, he walked to the island of Chios. He became drunk and, in that state Merope, daughter of the ruler. In his anger, the ruler blinded Orion, and sent him away. As Orion walked along, blind, he found the lame god, Hephaestus's Forge. Hephaestus's servent, showed Orion the way to the sun god, who restored his vision. When Orion arrived to punish the ruler of Chios, he arrived only to find, the king had hidden in tunnels far below. As Orion continued on his journeys, he met Artemis, the goddess of Hunting, and Newborn Creatures. She admired his skill, and talent at Hunting, and hunted with him. But, Apollo her brother, soon grew

He walked the lands of Greece, fearlessly, and fought all he could with his Bow & Arrow. Then a great gryphon came to him, and warned, "Beware the claws of the great serpant, they bring only curse & sorrow.". Orion, thinking that the gryphon was crazy ran away. The trees seemed to whisper, " Beware the claws of the Great Serpant, great serpant, great serpant.". Orion shook his head, trying to shake the dreadful warning, but it still echoed on. He continued on his path, figured the beasts of Greece, till one day, he came upon a beautiful maiden, perched atop a barrel of beer. Though she was pretty, her eyes seemed to flash with greed, and her nails were as sharp as talons. "Hello, my prince," she cackled. Suddenly a whirlpool, seemed to surrond her, and when it disappeared, a Dragon, the Great Serpant, appeared. She cackled and fought until Orion, took his final breath, earning a place in the stars for his courage, and

Since the beginning of recorded history, man has been telling grand adventure stories; exciting tales of heroes defeating enemies, seeking treasure, and experiencing perilous tribulations. “The Odyssey”, by the Greek poet Homer, is one of the most famous epics to date. It follows the adventures of the Greek king, Odysseus, as he travels through the Mediterranean, trying to return home. The protagonist of an epic is called the “epic hero”, and he must exhibit certain characteristics to fulfill this title: he must represent the values of his culture, be either aided or hindered by the gods, and demonstrate one or more character flaws. Because he meets all three criteria, Odysseus can be considered the definitive epic hero.…

I have chosen Cancer as my favorite constellation because it is the sign I was born under. Latin for "crab", it is the dimmest of all the zodiac constellations and used to be the Sun's most northerly position in the sky. It is located in between Gemini (to its west) and Leo(to its east). It is best known among stargazers as home of Praesepe, an open cluster. Cancer is most well known in Greek mythology as the crab sent by the goddess Hera to help the hydra kill Heracles.…

Unfortunately, Odysseus has “hopes of some friendly gifts (116),” and does not listen to his men when they urge him to come back to their ship. Odysseus is so used to being praised wherever he goes; it affects his natural instincts to run when he can. After Odysseus escapes from the Cyclops, another mistake he makes is to shout his name to Polyphemus. This furiates the god Poseidon and causes the many troubles Odysseus faces later on.…

The constellation Capricornus appeals to me more then the other constellations as it is the depiction of the Capricorn birth sign, which is the sign I fall under. This constellation represents Oannes the sea-goat God of Wisdom in Assyro-Babylonian depictions. The Capricornus is located in the Southern Sky and its name translates to "the goat" in Latin. Delta Capricorni is the brightest star in this constellation and it is the second most faintest constellation in the sky making it very difficult to see without the correct tools.…
